The eureka moment is a myth. It is an altogether naïve and fanciful account of human progress. Innovations emerge from a much less mysterious combination of historical, circumstantial, and accidental influences. This book explores the origin and evolution of several important behavioral innovations including the high five, the Heimlich maneuver, the butterfly stroke, the moonwalk, and the Iowa caucus. Such creations' striking suitability to the situation and the moment appear ingeniously designed with foresight. However, more often than not, they actually arise 'as if by design.' Based on investigations into the histories of a wide range of innovations, Edward A. Wasserman reveals the nature of behavioral creativity. What surfaces is a fascinating web of causation involving three main factors: context, consequence, and coincidence. Focusing on the process rather than the product of innovation elevates behavior to the very center of the creative human endeavor.

Although southern Appalachia is popularly seen as a purely white enclave, blacks have lived in the region from early times. Some hollows and coal camps are in fact almost exclusively black settlements. The selected readings in this new book offer the first comprehensive presentation of the black experience in Appalachia. Organized topically, the selections deal with the early history of blacks in the region, with studies of the black communities, with relations between blacks and whites, with blacks in coal mining, and with political issues. Also included are a section on oral accounts of black experiences and an analysis of black Appalachian demography. The contributors range from Carter Woodson and W. E. B. Du Bois to more recent scholars such as Theda Perdue and David A. Corbin. An introduction by the editors provides an overall context for the selections. Blacks in Appalachia focuses needed attention on a neglected area of Appalachian studies. It will be a valuable resource for students of Appalachia and of black history.

This title will be available in a looseleaf format for spring 2023 use. The casebound book will be published later in the spring. The second edition of Internet and Telecommunications Regulation has been completely revised, with the authors adding large sections that place the regulation of internet services at the heart of the book. The text is organized around regulatory themes, including the use of antitrust and sector-specific laws to respond to concerns about competition; the constraints on regulation imposed by the First Amendment; the relationship between state, national, and international regulation; the role of copyright; and statutory immunity for platforms from civil liability for third-party content. The book also includes important materials on the regulation of traditional telecommunications services not only because those services are important in their own right but also because the regulation of internet services builds on the regulation of traditional telecommunications services. Internet and Telecommunications Regulation contains discussions and excerpts from legal materials to help readers understand current controversies, regulatory strategies, and the historical developments that led to them. Summaries and previews at the start of each set of readings help students understand the relevance of the readings and the larger issues they present, and questions at the end of each excerpt encourage students to think critically about those materials. The organization easily permits the selection of material for courses focused on particular industries or on particular types of regulation.
