How do we practice hope after trauma? What shape does hope take after abuse? In grappling with these questions, Ashley E. Theuring implicates the entire church and advocates changing our theologies of hope and our understanding of resurrection. Reimagining the Empty Tomb narrative from the Gospel of Mark in light of the experiences of domestic violence survivors, Fragile Resurrection reveals the possibility for everyday practices and relationships to mediate hope and resurrection. Theuring constructs an embodied imaginative hope found in the wake of trauma, which can speak to our current context of trauma and uncertainty.

In this exciting novel set during the French Revolution, Charles Dickens expresses sympathy for the downtrodden poor and their outrage at the self-indulgent aristocracy. But Dickens is no friend of the vengeful mob that storms the Bastille and cheers the guillotine. As with all of his stories, his passion is for the unforgettable and unrepeatable individuals he creates. The sorrows of the suffering masses, their demands for justice, and the indiscriminate fury they unleash take flesh in Madame Defarge, while the self-sacrifice that is the truest means of atonement and rebirth manifests in the unlikely hero Sydney Carton. In A Tale of Two Cities, humanity does not show its best side in the mean streets of Paris or even London, but in the intimate circle of loyal friends that gathers around the honorable Doctor Manette and his lovely daughter, Lucie. About the Editor: Michael D. Aeschliman is Professor of Education at Boston University, Professor of English at the University of Italian Switzerland, and author of The Restitution of Man: C. S. Lewis and the Case against Scientism (1983, 1998). A widely published scholar and literary critic, he edited in 1987 a new edition of Malcolm Muggeridge's 1934 satirical-documentary novel, Winter in Moscow.

In the Gospel of John the Lord Jesus performs a number of miracles. The apostle John calls these miracles "signs," inviting us to consider the spiritual significance behind each one. In this booklet compiled from the Life-study of John, Witness Lee explains that the principle of all these signs is found in the first sign, the turning of water into wine. The turning of water into wine signifies the turning of death into life. The human life with its natural enjoyment runs out and fails in death, but the Lord changes death into life by regenerating the believers with the eternal, divine life of God Himself and ushering them into the full enjoyment of this life in this age and in the ages to come. This principle of life, to turn death into life, is the key to unlocking the spiritual significance of the remaining signs in the Gospel of John. All the miracles in this Gospel unveil Christ as the embodiment of the divine life coming to meet the need of every human being by overcoming death in all its manifestations and turning death into divine life.

This volume examines what the followers of Jesus meant when they declared that he was raised from the dead. This claim, which lies at the core of Christian faith, is one of the most controversial topics in Christianity. Jesus' resurrection has no analogy in human history. Although many 1st-century Jews expected the resurrection of the dead at the end of time, the Christian claim that this had already happened to one individual within the realm of history was unprecedented. Moreover, an affirmation of Jesus' bodily resurrection contradicts the known laws of nature. Additional difficulty comes from the nature of the available evidence. The New Testament sources not only mirror the worldview of ancient authors but also differ with regard to who saw him alive, what was the nature of his risen body, and whether the empty tomb was a widespread knowledge or an assumption based on prior beliefs. Novakovic presents all these issues in a clear and methodical way. She examines the literary sources and addresses various questions related to historical investigations of Jesus' resurrection.

The Resurrection of Jesus is one of the central beliefs of the Christian faith. This belief and teaching cut across all the Christian denominations. Hence, Paul teaches that if Christ had not risen from the dead, then we would have been the most foolish of all religious groups. But the fact that He, Christ, died and came back to life gives us the opportunity to glory in the resurrected Christ. The book, The Power of the Resurrection, is centered on the resurrection of Jesus, and the meaning that this resurrection has for us as individual Christians, who believe in the risen Lord. It is not a theological work aimed at defining the resurrection, nor is it a historical work aimed at tracing or verifying the veracity the resurrection. No. It is rather a faith lifting book on the basis of the resurrection story as we have it in the Christian bible. Just as Jesus rose from the dead in the midst of all the opposing tides, so shall those who trust in him rise above all opposing tides in their life. Jesus could not be stopped, so also by the grace of Him who rose from the dead; nothing is going to stop your upliftment and manifestation also. The resurrection shall be your experience in your daily life and at the end of time, he who raised Jesus from the dead shall give life to your own mortal body too. This is the argument of the book. Jesus, the son of God, came into the world for the love of humanity. His teachings were misunderstood, and so through the journey to Calvary, he was crucified and died on the cross on Calvary. Yes he died. The chief priests and the scribes and the Pharisees, in conjunction with Pilate, conspired against him. He was sentenced to death. He accepted the death willingly and lovingly. He died that we might be saved. Hence, his death brought salvation to the world. However, before he died, he promised the resurrection. He did not hide the fact of the resurrection. Openly he said, the son of man shall be delivered into the hand of sinners, he shall be put to death, but on the third day, he will rise again. In another place, he said, destroy this temple, and in three days, I shall raise it up, and there was misunderstanding again. The people thought he was referring to the physical temple, but from scripture, we know he was referring to his body rising from the dead. Thus he did spoke about the resurrection quite clearly. This is where this book hinges its weight. Because he promised the resurrection, after the execution, the chief priests and the soldiers, knowing what he was capable of doing, asked the permission of Pilate for the grave to be guarded till the third day. This is because he said on the third day, “I will rise again”. They knew that it could happen. They said: this man who gave sight to the blind, who raised the dead (Lazarus and also Jairus’ Daughter), who cleansed lepers, who casts out devils; this same man said on the third day I will rise again. And they concluded: if he should “rise again” from the dead, then it will be worse for us. Hence, they received the permission to guard the grave, to prevent any rising from the dead. Humanly speaking therefore, the resurrection would not have been possible. This is because they did everything to prevent it. They put a very big stone to wedge the entrance, hence no coming out and no going in. More so, they stayed on guard with weapons to prevent any fraudulent act. They were prepared to kill again even if he should try to come out of the grave; that is, if he was able to overcome the wedging stone. Therefore, from the human point of view, it was impossible. By their calculation, they have overcome, they have conquered, and they have become victorious.

When the Church gets lost in the maze of competing cultural agendas, its revolutionary message and life-giving influence are compromised and eventually consumed. This increasing marginalization is exactly what began to happen in the latter half of the twentieth century. Many say the answer is for the Christian community to seek a more prominent position in society, but respected teacher and best-selling author Dr. Robert L. Wise contends that we must confront the surrounding culture with a deeper understanding of Christ’s resurrection. Only by recovering and sharing the resurrection of the living Lord can the Church reclaim the experience of the first believers, who found in the resurrection a doorway to personal redemption that, in turn, transformed society around them. The Son Rises is a fresh exploration of Jesus Christ’s resurrection from the dead and His promise of continuing relationship with those who believe in Him.
