p="" This book is intended for a wide range of researchers both from academia and industry interested in contributing to industries in an interdisciplinary way. The primary industries, including agriculture, fishery, and power industries, are the most fundamental infrastructure of the human societies. Traditionally, primary industries have been managed in the small family/community base, but with increase in population and development of society, the size of primary industry has grown. The efficiency, quality, and stability of these industries affect the societies significantly, so that they have become one of the major areas that mathematics could contribute to substantially. Also, primary industries are affected by the environment, where mathematical studies play an essential role. The conference was hosted by the research community in New Zealand, where such collaborative activities in mathematics between the industry and academia have been successfully established from an early stage. This enabled the conference to bring together a range of research topics- from pioneering works to cutting-edge results, from agriculture to geothermal energy and nuclear fusion, and from mathematical modeling and analysis to data analysis. ^

This volume includes selected technical papers presented at the Forum “Math-for-Industry” 2018. The papers written by eminent researchers and academics working in the area of industrial mathematics from the viewpoint of financial mathematics, machine learning, neural networks, inverse problems, stochastic modelling, etc., discuss how the ingenuity of science, technology, engineering and mathematics are and will be expected to be utilized. This volume focuses on the role that mathematics-for-industry can play in interdisciplinary research to develop new methods. The contents are useful for researchers both in academia and industry working in interdisciplinary sectors.

This book is the “Study Book” of ICMI-Study no. 20, which was run in cooperation with the International Congress on Industry and Applied Mathematics (ICIAM). The editors were the co-chairs of the study (Damlamian, Straesser) and the organiser of the Study Conference (Rodrigues). The text contains a comprehensive report on the findings of the Study Conference, original plenary presentations of the Study Conference, reports on the Working Groups and selected papers from all over world. This content was selected by the editors as especially pertinent to the study each individual chapter represents a significant contribution to current research.

This book is a collection of papers presented at the conference “Forum Math-for-Industry 2014” for which the unifying theme was “Applications + Practical Conceptualization + Mathematics = fruitful Innovation” in October 2014. This epigram encapsulates the dynamics of the process that takes an application through to an innovation. Industrial mathematics can be viewed as the causal engine that implements the epigram by taking an Application such as input and convolving it with a mixture of Practical Conceptualization and Mathematics to generate a fruitful Innovation as output. The book illustrates various aspects of the two-way interaction between applications and their association highlighting how practical conceptualization assists with the linking of the question that encapsulates the current application to the relevant mathematics. The contents of this volume address productive and successful interaction between industry and mathematicians, as well as the cross-fertilization and collaboration that result when mathematics is involved with the advancement of science and technology.
