Material published in this edition is compiled by Dr. Chris Yessios. While no attempt was made to group the articles, since each is quite unique, they can be viewed under a number of thematic categories. There are at least 7 articles that deal more or less directly with the use of digital tools for the generation of innovative forms. Another 8 articles present specific building designs and 5 more present specific urban design schemes. The common denominator for all is the use of the digital tools to create forms that are distinctly different from traditional forms. A group of some 6 papers specifically discusses and compares digital versus analogue methodologies. In all cases, the former are more persuasive. Fabrication or computer aided manufacturing (CAM) is represented by at least 3 papers, while hints of digital fabrication can be found in a number of other papers as well. 6 articles are directly concerned with education: either the theoretical ties of digital design to “ancient principals” or how to de- velop particular skills. The only paper from a high school elaborates on this topic. Finally, there are 5 articles that cannot be grouped with the above categories but would fit in a category possibly labeled “miscellaneous theories.” For example, “Transforming Habit” and “Interpreting Babel” would belong to such a category.

This publication features twenty-seven refereed essays on pedagogical approaches to digital media applications for art and design. Authors from around the world presented theories and strategies to engage students for enhanced learning experiences in digital media courses in educational settings ranging from high school to graduate school, in a wide variety of design fields including furniture design, graphic design, set design, fashion design, interior design, urban design, and architecture. It consists of 144 color pages, and has been widely distributed in hardcopy form to most schools of architecture and interior design in the United States and other developed countries. This series continued following the framework I set with three subsequent issues.

Many countries confront similar human rights controversies, but, despite the claimed universality of human rights values they are not always resolved in the same way. Why? What role do local legal conditions play? Is human rights discourse more potent where rights are constitutionally entrenched, rather than where there is a tradition of respect for underlying human rights values but no bill of rights? Comparative socio-legal examination of three recent controversies - double jeopardy reform, recognition of same-sex relationships and the operation of hate speech laws - in four countries - Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the United Kingdom provides answers to these questions. Examination of these controversies suggests that differences in the design of domestic legal institutions and procedures for the injection of human rights values into legal decision-making processes can have a powerful effect on the manner in which human rights issues are constructed, handled and resolved.

The European Union and its member states are investing in ambitious programmes for ‘better regulation’ and targets of regulatory quality. This book, available in paperback for the first time, lifts the veil of excessively optimistic propositions covering the whole better regulation agenda. It provides an innovative conceptual framework to handle the political complexity of regulatory governance. It approaches better regulation as an emerging public policy, with its own political context, actors, problems, rules of interaction, instruments, activities and impacts. Focusing on the key tools of impact assessment, consultation, simplification, and access to legislation, the authors provide fresh empirical evidence on the progress made in the member states and in Brussels, drawing on an extensive research project and an original survey of directors of better regulation programmes in Europe. Radaelli and De Francesco show how indicators define, measure, and appraise better regulation policy, linking measures to policy processes in which the stakeholders learn by monitoring. Although better regulation is a top priority for competitiveness in Europe and the legitimacy of EU policy, the level of commitment and the development of tools vary considerably. The major challenge for better regulation is institutionalisation - this calls for clear choices in terms of what the EU wants from better regulation. Essential reading for academics (political scientists, lawyers, and public economists) and policy-makers in charge of regulatory reforms in governments and international organisations.
