Forests are “victims” of disaster when unable to provide services required by society and cannot recover within a relevant timeframe. Trees damaged may host insect pests that may kill healthy trees or become fuel for forest fires. Fallen trees also damage infrastructure.Extreme events can change the cultural and economic life of small states/islands and/or cause the breakdown of societal services.Disasters affect timber supplies, distorting market functioning. Damaged timber is susceptible to attack from insects and fungi, quickly losing value, and insect attacks may spread to healthy trees.Forests can mitigate disasters by e.g. reducing the intensity of tsunamis or stabilizing slopes. Single trees may become important refuges for people during floods.Key messages include:• Responses require planning and training to enable efficient response also in the absence of key personnel.• Information about the location of critical resources is important, e.g. key staff, forestry equipment, access routes, and timber storage sites.• It is impossible for many small countries to be resilient on their own. Development of regional response capacity is desirable, e.g. pools of qualified operators, equipment resources, and training.• Salvage timber is a resource and an economic asset. Planning on the use of forest resources after disasters is rarely undertaken, and policies or regulations covering this type of use are often missing.• Salvaging timber is dangerous and requires training.

Climate change, demographic transitions, technological developments and innovation are megatrends affecting forestry work. As the conditions of forestry work change, so does the nature of the work-related risks. Despite efforts and improvements made over the past few decades, forests continue to be one of the most hazardous industrial workplaces, with those working in forests exposed to considerable occupational safety and health (OSH) risks as well as to a high incidence of occupational accidents and work-related diseases. In view of recent transformations in forestry work, and taking into account the recent inclusion of a safe and healthy working environment in the ILO’s framework of fundamental principles and rights at work, this report identifies trends and opportunities as well as challenges to promote safe and healthy working conditions in the forest sector. It contributes to understanding the importance of decent and sustainable work in forestry, with the objective of informing the design and implementation of policies and training programmes to advance a just transition in forestry following the framework of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, particularly Sustainable Development Goals 8 on decent work and economic growth and 15 on life on land. This report has been produced jointly by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE).

This book assembles cutting edge contemporary research and thinking on multiple forms and meanings of displacements and their geographies: patterns of shifting, dislocation, or putting out of place; substitutions of one idea for another or the unconscious transfer of intense feelings or emotions; activities occurring outside their normal context; and replacements of one thing by another. The COVID-19 pandemic, declared by the World Health Organization in 2020, produced new displacements and intensified existing patterns of displacement and dispossession. At the same time, socionatural displacements - floods, fires, droughts, hurricanes, sea-level rise, species loss, and dislocation - were the backdrop to the displaced and deferred hopes of the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference. The chapters in this volume contend with how we as geographers conceptualize and theorize displacements; the range of sites, spaces, processes, affects, scales, and actors we study with to understand them; and what is at stake politically in how we research displacements. It is also a pandemic archive of academic labor, in which we find traces of displacements within and beyond the academic discipline of geography. Geographies of Displacement/s will be of particular interest to students, scholars and researchers of Geography including those interested in human geography, socio-natural displacements, and the politics of migration and displacement. Extreme weather and climate events, interacting with exposed and vulnerable human and natural systems, can lead to disasters. This Special Report explores the social as well as physical dimensions of weather- and climate-related disasters, considering opportunities for managing risks at local to international scales. SREX was approved and accepted by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) on 18 November 2011 in Kampala, Uganda.
