Thirty-year-old David Freid isn't sure what to do with his life. He hates his job as a clerical assistant at the City University of New York, and his monologues as a stand-up comedian twice a week at Patti's Caf aren't well received. In addition to suffering from chronic prostatitis, he can't find a girl. The turning point comes when David discovers a photograph of his urologist's daughter, Kara Rosenblum. Despite the fact that she doesn't know he exists, he becomes convinced they are meant to be together. At the same time, an elusive talent scout from Comedy World is expected to make a surprise appearance at the club where David performs. The problem is that nobody knows if the scout is legitimate or not. In a moment of clarity, David decides that if he can get the urologist's daughter and the talent scout to both show up at his Saturday night gig, he will not only get discovered but win the love of the girl with whom he is obsessed.

Set in Mumbai, this novel delves into the minds of Farhan, Madhav and Sanjay – three men whose lives are intertwined together by a quirk of fate. It traces the history of their forefathers and the events leading to the 1993 Mumbai riots and subsequent terror attacks and the paths chosen by the three protagonists. The tale moves from pre-partition days to current day Mumbai, looking intimately at the changing milieu and its impact on the three men and their families. As the narrative progresses, there also emerges a constant dialogue with the readers, bringing the mirror to their face and drawing them into looking at various societal issues, the greatest of which are intolerance and apathy. The three men are drawn towards each other on a bloody morning near Shivaji Park, Mumbai's middle class hub. They go back, changed, but are again pulled towards each other. The story culminates at the same place, as dusk slowly settles in, fifteen years later as the three adversaries are pitched into a battle of life and death.

In a place where murder isn’t supposed to happen—Southern Illinois—deputy sheriff and investigator Harry Spiller learned the hard reality: murder is all around us. It doesn’t matter whether you live in a big city or small county with farms and churches—murder is swift and can happen to anyone, anywhere, and anytime. All too often, victims fall prey in places we think are safe to raise our families, where we take walks on hot summer nights, where our children play in the park or yard without concern, and where we leave our doors unlocked at night. Murder in the Heartland tells the stories of innocent victims in these seemingly innocent places. From his research and investigations of twenty murder cases, Spiller recounts the gruesome details of an axe murder, a hitchhiking incident, serial killings, and even a victim buried within the concrete floors of her own basement. As much as we like to think we’re safe, murder can happen even in rural America—and it does. Join Spiller in his first of three installments of these horrifying murders in the heartland.
