Includes the Aerial Warfare In Europe During World War II illustrations pack with over 200 maps, plans, and photos. Hanna Reitsch is unusual in being a feminine woman who was yet the equal of men in a dangerous male profession — test-piloting new military aircraft. Her love of flying from childhood on, along with her superior intelligence, determination, and ability to withstand tremendous stresses, gave her the edge that allowed her to rise to the top of the aviation world. Hanna Reitsch offered her gifts to the German nation in the same way that Adolf Hitler and many others did — with a complete giving of herself and her abilities, holding nothing back. Although she lived to 1979, she never renounced her participation with the National Socialist government or criticized Hitler, even under pressure to do so. Hanna’s life story is an amazing one that sounds almost unbelievable in its drama and acts of heroism. She never married or had children; instead she occupied herself with the two burning loves of her life — flying and the salvation of her beloved Fatherland in its time of need.

The post-flight reports from each of the six Apollo missions regarding the success of a one-time attempt to land on the Moon confirmed in the opinion of each of the Commanders (pilots) that the LLRV was absolutely mandatory to train a human pilot to land a vehicle (the LM) of the Apollo era successfully on the lunar surface. Wayne Ottinger and his colleagues at FRC had created a marvelous flying machine called the Lunar Landing Training Vehicle, a unique machine that gave us the confidence and capabilities to ensure the Apollo Lunar Module never failed in landing at six different and unknown locations on the Moon. This remarkable book tells the full story of how they did it—Apollo will be ever thankful for their inspiration and innovation, a true milestone in the history of human flight. David R. In this series, William Dean Howells delightfully describes the early years of his life, in the "Boy's Town" of Ohio, the state where he was born and raised. These stories remain as a vivid autobiographical records and colorful images of a life in the mid-nineteenth century American town. Extract: "If there was any fellow in the Boy's Town fifty years ago who had a good reason to run off it was Pony Baker. Pony was not his real name; it was what the boys called him, because there were so many fellows who had to be told apart, as Big Joe and Little Joe, and Big John and Little John, and Big Bill and Little Bill, that they got tired of telling boys apart that way; and after one of the boys called him Pony Baker, so that you could know him from his cousin Frank Baker, nobody ever called him anything else." William Dean Howells (1837-1920) was an American realist author, literary critic, and playwright. Nicknamed "The Dean of American Letters", he was particularly known for his tenure as editor of the Atlantic Monthly as well as his own prolific writings, including the Christmas story "Christmas Every Day", and the novels The Rise of Silas Lapham and A Traveler from Altruria. Howells is known to be the father of American realism, and a denouncer of the sentimental novel. He was the first American author to bring a realist aesthetic to the literature of the United States. His stories of Boston upper crust life set in the 1850s are highly regarded among scholars of American fiction.
