The beginning of World War I saw thousands of army and navy aviators who needed specialized clothing that could not be purchased off-the-shelf. During World War II pilots and crews flew countless missions in extreme conditions, from the Arctic to the South Pacific. Through both wars, providing suitable clothing to personnel aboard many different types of aircraft proved a monumental task. This book documents the development, testing, manufacture, procurement and utilization of flying apparel and accessories worn by American airmen around the world between 1917 and 1945. Among the garments explored are various types of flight suits--including heavy winter shearling suits and electrically heated suits--flight jackets, flotation gear, headgear, handwear and footwear. With appendices that include contemporary brochures detailing the care and maintenance of flight clothing, this study provides a thorough exploration of a rarely examined aspect of military history.

This second of a two volume study closely examines the development and uses of personal flying equipment issued to the combat personnel of the Luftwaffe and Royal Air Force throughout World War II. Illustrated wih over 500 photographs - 450 in color and including many detailed close-ups - this book brings together an exceptional array of rarely seen combat equipment. From compasses secreted in tunic buttons, to floating rations, and from suits with built-in parachutes, to box-kite radio antennae, you'll find it all discussed in this volume. All types of parachutes and harnesses, life preservers and the origin of the "Mae West" nickname, inflatable boats, survival tools, weapons for self-defense, and even some of the paperwork and personal items carried by the airmen of these two opposing air forces. Study the sophisticated rescue and survival equipment available to Luftwaffe crews, alongside the clever, yet often brilliantly simple devices which enabled so many RAF flyers to evade capture for so long, some eventually making it home through occupied Europe. Like its companion volume Luftwaffe vs. RAF: Flying Clothing of the Air War, 1939-45, this book will be an invaluable reference for artists, collectors, modellers, living history re-enactors and military historians, and should be of interest to anyone with an affinity for the human side of twentieth century military history. Mick Prodger is also the author of Vintage Flying Helmets: Aviation Headgear Before the Jet Age (from Schiffer Publishing Ltd.).

"This report presents a height-weight sizing system for use by designers and fitters of flight clothing. The observations and recommendations reported here are based on a re-analysis of the body size data of the 1950 Anthropometric Survey of Air Force flying personnel. This re-analysis consisted of selecting pairs of dimensions and correlating these with other dimensions important in clothing design. Among the pairs studied, height and weight have been chosen as basic sizing dimensions because they generally yield the highest correlations with other bodily dimensions. In addition to presenting the methodology used in the present problem, the practical and statistical problems of developing a sizing system are thoroughly discussed. Finally, tables of body dimensional data are presented for several basic size programs (6-size, 8-size, 9-size, and 12-size), since the number of sizes varies with the type of garment. These tables include fitting charts, estimated procurement tariffs, design ranges, mean values for size groups, and bivariate tables for height and weight with size categories marked off for each program. The choice and application of these programs are discussed in detail. Descriptions of the selected body dimensions are included. Advantages of the height-weight system include improved fit, fewer alterations, minimal adjustability, and simplified procurement, distribution and fitting procedures."--Abstract.
