Annotation The first five chapters in this manual for users and manufacturers of FIA technology describe the principles and properties of detection methods, including molecular and atomic spectroscopy detection methods, electrochemical methods, enzymatic methods and immunoassays, and photoacoustic spectroscopic detection. Chapters six and seven cover on-line sample processing and speciation analysis. Chapter eight (the longest chapter) discusses applications of flow injection methods in routine analysis, including environmental applications and analysis of food products and biological and mineral materials, clinical analysis, pharmaceutical and biotechnology applications, and process analysis. The last three chapters cover sequential and batch injection techniques, review commercially available instrumentation, and discuss current trends in developments of flow analysis. This is a practical guide for first-time and experienced users of Flow Injection Analysis (FIA). It gives, not a detailed theoretical analysis, but a ``nuts and bolts'' approach to the description of the technique and how it can be utilized to solve analytical chemical problems. The advantages of flow injection, how, when, why and where it works are all fully explained. Criteria for the choice of hardware and useful hints for maintenance are provided. The large variety of detectors suitable to combine with FIA are discussed, as are special modes of operation, their advantages and their limitations, and also conversion of batch methods to FIA methods. Numerous in-depth descriptions of applications of FIA techniques in water, soil, pharmaceutical and industrial analysis are featured, and a complete bibliography is included. The authors have spent several years demonstrating, lecturing and using FIA and the basic outline of their book closely follows the schedule of the FIA workshops they have taught. It will be an invaluable tool for all chemists who perform analyses on a routine basis.

There is an increasing interest by consumers for high-quality food products with a clear geographical origin. With these products in demand, suitable analytical techniques are needed for the quality control. Current analytical approaches are mass spectrometry techniques, spectroscopic techniques, separation techniques, and others. Fingerprinting Techniques in Food Authentication and Traceability discusses the principles of the techniques together with their advantages and drawbacks, and reported applications concerning geographical authenticity. A combination of methods analyzing different types of food compounds seems to be the most promising approach to establish the geographical origin. The abundant acquired data are analyzed by chemometrics. Producing safe and high-quality food is a prerequisite to ensure consumer health and successful domestic and international trade, and is critical to the sustainable development of national agricultural resources. Systems to trace food or feed products through specified stages of production, processing, and distribution play a key role in assuring food safety. Analytical techniques that enable the provenance of food to be determined provide an independent means of verifying traceability systems and also help to prove product authenticity, to combat fraudulent practices and to control adulteration, which are important issues for economic, religious, or cultural reasons. Proof of provenance has become an important topic in the context of food safety, food quality, and consumer protection in accordance with national legislation and international standards and guidelines.
