Flash fiction is a type of storytelling that includes a limited number of words. Flash fiction is typically any story with fewer than 1,000 words, although flashes can sometimes be longer. The flashes in this volume are all under 1,500 words. Flash fiction can be a helpful method of improving English language skills once a student has reached a higher level (B1 or B2) in the language. The student understands the basics of the language and should have a decent vocabulary, but they are not yet fluent. Flash fiction, as opposed to novels or even novellas, are very short, self-contained stories. They include a minimal number of characters and often describe tiny moments rather than a larger story. There are simply fewer words and sentiments to miss in 1,000 words (a typical flash) as opposed to 80,000 words (a typical novel). Each flash in this volume includes words in bold that a B1 or B2 student may not be familiar with. Each word in bold is defined in a vocabulary list immediately following its flash. Each phrasal verb or idiom that is underlined is also described in the pages following its flash. Once the flash has been read and all its words understood, each has a series of exercises and comprehension questions meant to solidify the student’s understanding.

This book considers the key critical interventions on short story writing in South Africa written in English since the year 2000. The short story genre, whilst often marginalised in national literary canons, has been central to the trajectory of literary history in South Africa. In recent years, the short story has undergone a significant renaissance, with new collections and young writers making a significant impact on the contemporary literary scene, and subgenres such as speculative fiction, erotic fiction, flash fiction and queer fiction expanding rapidly in popularity. This book examines the role of the short story genre in reflecting or championing new developments in South African writing and the ways in which traditional boundaries and definitions of the short story in South Africa have been reimagined in the present. Drawing together a range of critical interventions, including scholarly articles, interviews and personal reflective pieces, the volume traces some of the aesthetic and thematic continuities and discontinuities in the genre and sheds new light on questions of literary form. Finally, the book considers the place of the short story in twenty-first century writing and interrogates the ways in which the short story form may contribute to, or recast ideas of, the post-apartheid or post-transitional. The perfect guide to contemporary short story writing in South Africa, this book will be essential reading for researchers of African literature.

After doing this every month in 2011, Vaughan decided to create an anthology to honor the writers who shared their work on the radio program. Writers include Meg Tuite, Sheldon Lee Compton, Susan Gibb, Len Kuntz, Julie Innis, Sam Rasnake, Susan Tepper, Joani Reese, Christopher Allen, Sara Lippmann and many more.
