This book spans a period of 211 years – beginning in 1803 on a small farm in northern Sweden and ending in Sarasota, Florida in 2014. The story involves a farmer, a shoemaker, an industrialist and several businessmen who were very much involved in various civic organizations in their local communities. There are family holidays in the south of France but there are also lonely struggles of being a farmer in northern Illinois in the mid-1800s, in the days before any machinery when they used a pair of oxen to farm.

Developing solutions for our political dysfunctionones that would gain broad bipartisan supportcould significantly strengthen our American democracy so that it can be even more of a shining example for the rest of the world as to how a truly successful liberal democracy can work. American citizens have a huge stake in the future success of the American experiment. Our honor and common sense tell us that we need to do this for our children and our grandchildren. More than one million Americans have died fighting in various wars since our country was founded. It is clear that working for the passage of this proposed constitutional amendment to solve the biggest sources of our political dysfunction is a noble cause worth supporting wholeheartedly. The cause for American democracy is, in great measure, the cause for mankind, which is what Abe Lincoln referred to in 1862 when he told Congress, “We shall nobly save, or meanly lose, the last best hope of earth.”25 Perhaps the U.S. can increase the extent to which we inspire people in other parts of the world, leading by setting a good example that others can admire. As former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg said, “When people vote with their feet, they come here.

Robert M. Keating's story is America's story. Born in Springfield, Massachusetts, in 1862 to poor Irish immigrants, he was just 13 when his father died suddenly. A precocious boy with a knack for mechanics, Keating filed his first patent at 22, started his own bicycle company at 28, and at 32 was producing one of the most innovative bicycle lines in the world in a state-of-the-art factory. Along the way he flirted with baseball, briefly playing in the major leagues and patenting the game's rubberized home plate. In early 1901 Keating developed and marketed a ground-breaking motorcycle before either Indian or Harley-Davidson, and later successfully sued both companies for patent infringement. His company also manufactured automobiles beginning in 1898, producing both electric and gasoline powered vehicles. At the time of his death at 59, Keating held 49 patents--everything from bicycle and motorcycle designs to lunch-chairs to a modern flushing device for toilets. This book tells the story of Keating and his Keating Wheel Company, a Gilded Age story of unbridled inventiveness that encapsulates America's transformation into a society that would forever move on wheels.

This book helps readers understand the current status of archivists in the United States. It addresses issues of professionalization by re-examining two major aspects of the archival community: institutional forms and structures, and the basic educational foundations that are important to any profession. While United States archivists now seem poised to develop new approaches to the management of electronic records, including research and education venues, this profession?s long journey to reach this point is an interesting step on the continuing road to professionalization. The First Generation of Electronic Records Archivists in the United States represents the first major study of how and why American archivists have struggled to contend with the management of electronic records. The book provides a framework for studying this issue, includes suggestions for additional research, and serves as a basis for discussion about the continued strengthening of the archival profession. Despite more than thirty years of striving to manage electronic records, American archivists have not developed an effective infrastructure for this purpose. The First Generation of Electronic Records Archivists in the United States considers the evidence for this failure by evaluating archival literature on the topic of electronic records management. It examines how position descriptions in state government archives and job advertisements across the discipline have reflected a bias toward paper-based formats, and the failure of graduate and continuing archival education programs to deal effectively with electronic records. The book details: state government archives and position descriptions trends and practices in the Information Age, 1976--1990 graduate archival education and electronic records: an analysis of current approaches and their strengths and weaknesses the effectiveness of the NAGARA Institute as a form of advanced archival education problems, challenges, opportunities, and needs for additional researchThe First Generation of Electronic Records Archivists in the United States is an enlightening study for library and information science educators, archival graduate students, and archivists themselves as they work toward the professionalization of their field.
