This tutorial shows how to use Maple both as a calculator with instant access to hundreds of high-level math routines and as a programming language for more demanding tasks. It covers topics such as the basic data types and statements in the Maple language. It explains the differences between numeric computation and symbolic computation and illustrates how both are used in Maple. Extensive "how-to" examples are used throughout the tutorial to show how common types of calculations can be expressed easily in Maple. The manual also uses many graphics examples to illustrate the way in which 2D and 3D graphics can aid in understanding the behavior of functions.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the First International Workshop on Numerical Analysis and Its Applications, WNAA'96, held in Rousse, Bulgaria, in June 1996. The 57 revised full papers presented were carefully selected and reviewed for inclusion in the volume; also included are 14 invited presentations. All in all, the book offers a wealth of new results and methods of numerical analysis applicable in computational science, particularly in computational physics and chemistry. The volume reflects that the cooperation of computer scientists, mathematicians and scientists provides new numerical tools for computational scientists and, at the same time, stimulates numerical analysis.

This undergraduate textbook on Linear Algebra and n-Dimensional Geometry, in a self-teaching style, is invaluable for sophomore level undergraduates in mathematics, engineering, business, and the sciences. These are classical subjects on which there are many mathematics books in theorem-proof style, but this unique volume has its focus on developing the mathematical modeling as well as computational and algorithmic skills in students at this level. The explanations in this book are detailed, lucid, and supported with numerous well-constructed examples to capture the interest and encourage the student to master the material.

Nonlinearities exist in all process control systems. The use of linear control techniques is valid only in a narrow region of operation. Nonlinear control is central to future industrial development. In this book, multivariable nonlinear control techniques based on differential geometry are considered in a pragmatic manner. The book provides a simplified and systematic approach to geometric nonlinear control theory. A case study of an industrial evaporator is used as an example throughout the entire book. Various other examples are also used throughout the text to illustrate the theory. The book successfully demonstrates the superiority and simplicity of the class of controllers studied through simulations and actual plant implementations. The simulations were done using the symbolic computation package MAPLE. Discussions are given on the application of symbolic computation in process engineering. This book is aimed at industrial practitioners and postgraduates in engineering, and will be particularly valuable to practicing engineers who find the theory books on control somewhat heavy going. The insights provided in the book will encourage more industrial implementations of nonlinear controllers, and thereby help to bridge the widening gap between control theory and industrial practice.
