Sight is one of the primary senses used to take in information. When the total or partial loss of sight occurs, a person must adapt. This population has an assumed greater risk for injury from fires and falls. Both risks can and should be reduced by efforts of the fire service. The problem is the populations of blind and visually impaired persons may not be getting fire and injury prevention messages. The purpose of this applied research project is to find out whether the blind and visually impaired population is getting fire and injury prevention messages, and if fire departments are targeting the blind and visually impaired population in their public education efforts.
