Individual, be it a claimant or an unauthorized person, identification is one of the top challenges of the world. We know that no two individuals have similar fingerprint configuration and this configuration remains constant over the life of a human being. Fingerprint is characterized by a set of ridge lines which often flow parallel, sometimes intersect and sometimes terminate. The points where ridge lines terminate or fork are called minutiae. They can be represented by a vector whose direction is tangent to the ridge line. In this project, we study fingerprint analysis. We present a fingerprint matching scheme that utilizes a ridge feature map to match fingerprint images. The proposed scheme uses a set of 8 Gabor filters, whose spatial frequencies correspond to the average inter-ridge spacing in fingerprints, is used to capture the ridge strength at equally spaced orientations. A circular tessellation of filtered image is then used to construct the ridge feature map. The genuine accept rate of the Gabor filter based matcher is observed to be ~ 10% to 15% higher than that of minutiae-based matcher at low false accept rates.

The two-volume set LNCS 6753/6754 constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 8th International Conference on Image and Recognition, ICIAR 2011, held in Burnaby, Canada, in June 2011. This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the International Workshop on Biometric Recognition Systems, IWBRS 2005, held in Beijing, China in October 2005 within the scope of ICCV 2005, the International Conference on Computer Vision. This workshop combines the annual Chinese Conference on Biometric Recognition (Sinobiometrics 2005). The 32 revised full papers were carefully reviewed and selected from 130 submissions. The papers address the problems of automatic and reliable authentication of individuals in face, iris, fingerprint, palmprint, speaker, writing and other biometrics, and contribute new ideas to research and development of reliable and practical solutions for biometric authentication.

This book presents multibiometric watermarking techniques for security of biometric data. This book also covers transform domain multibiometric watermarking techniques and their advantages and limitations. The authors have developed novel watermarking techniques with a combination of Compressive Sensing (CS) theory for the security of biometric data at the system database of the biometric system. The authors show how these techniques offer higher robustness, authenticity, better imperceptibility, increased payload capacity, and secure biometric watermarks. They show how to use the CS theory for the security of biometric watermarks before embedding into the host biometric data. The suggested methods may find potential applications in the security of biometric data at various banking applications, access control of laboratories, nuclear power stations, military base, and airports.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the International Conference on Biometrics, ICB 2007, held in Seoul, Korea, August 2007. Biometric criteria covered by the papers are assigned to face, fingerprint, iris, speech and signature, biometric fusion and performance evaluation, gait, keystrokes, and others.
