Frances Jerome has been tormented by the disappearance of her childhood best friend, Imogene, for decades. Despite her best efforts, Frances hasn’t built honest or intimate relationships with anyone since, including her son and daughter, and she’ll never forgive her father for the role he played in Imogene’s disappearance. Worst of all, she blames herself for turning her back on her best friend when she needed her most. After 43 years of remission, Frances’s cancer returns with a vengeance, and she knows she doesn’t deserve to rest in peace until Imogene can too. Frances enlists the help of her daughter Jean, who is struggling with her identity as a mother and a wife, and Griffin, a burned-out private detective whose father was haunted by this case before his death. Together, they try to find Imogene before Frances’s time runs out. But will finding Imogene offer the answers, justice, and peace they each long for? Or will the truth expose far more than they can imagine? In her third novel, Teri Case explores the complexities of familial relationships at the intersection when past and present collide, and the truth is finally revealed.

In this study of collaborative writing in western American literature, Linda K. Karell asks broad and fruitful questions about how writing in general is produced. By examining "collaboration" both as a process and as a product, she challenges the definition of an author as an individual genius who creates original works of art in isolation. From a collaborative view, what was a fairly direct cause and effect scenario (individual author + inspiration = original literary masterpiece) becomes something much less clear. An individual is always located within a shifting context of texts from which he or she draws to produce?often with substantial and varied support from other writers, editors, spouses or partners, and institutions?a work that will be termed "original." Collaboration insists on recognizing this oft-hidden contribution of others as an important component of meaning, something our traditional understanding of the author persists in ignoring or displacing. Karell provides a close analysis of the various means by which writers work with others to produce their final literary products. Methods include traditional joint writing practices such as ghostwriting or "edited" texts, as in the case of Mourning Dove and ethnographer Lucullus McWhorter; the incorporation of existing diaries or letters from other writers, for example, Wallace Stegner's Angle of Repose with Mary Hallock Foote; and dual-authored texts such as those produced by Louise Erdrich and Michael Dorris. By challenging the seductive myth of the solitary writer within the context of the myth of the independent westerner, Karell makes the compelling argument that collaboration is an inescapable part of writing.

"A story of Long Island life: the scenes are laid on Great South Bay, along the south shore of Long Island and Fire Island beach. The chief location of the action of the tale is Pepperidge Manor, Meadowneck. the principle characters are the descendants of the old English settlers who still claim to be the aristocrats of the island. The author mixes and matches thinly disguised members of the Tangier Smith family along with area locals. The story opens with a scene that tells of a curse pronounced by Mad Nancy fifty years ago on the present lord of the Manor, Barnabas Fanning. The feud arising out of this incident, and the questions of a lost will that follows, affect several of the grandchildren of the two parties to this ancient wrong, especially Robert Fanning and Imogene--whom he calls the Little Red Princess. Robert comes into Imogene's life like the king of her fairy fancies. The story of their growing love is disturbed by the suspicions of her relatives. There is a flight to New York, a terrible awakening for Imogene, whose ship of dreams seems suddenly wrecked; then the revenge of her big brother on Robert, and the ultimate reunion of the two"--Bookman review.
