This interim response action will consist of the treatment and disposal of wastewater from bld1727 sum to mitigate 1) Any future release of contaminated water and 2) The potential adverse affects associated with a release of contaminated water. In addition, this IRA will reduce the mobility, toxicity, and volume of contaminate water in the sump. This final decision document provides summaries of: 1. Alternatives considered 2. Significant events leading to the initiation of the IRA 3. The IRA project 4. The applicable or relevant and appropriate requirements, standards, criteria, or limitations (ARAR's) associated with the program. The preferred action is to pump and treat with existing activated alumina/granular activated carbon treatment system.

Presented in this report are the operation and maintenance procedures (Volume I) and the health and safety plan (Volume II). For the activated alumina/ granulated activated carbon wastewater treatment system that was installed adjacent to sump 1727 during October and November 1987. The system train consists of (1) an untreated wastewater holding tank, (2) a pH adjustment system, and (3) parallel AA/GAC treatment trains. The total system presently treats four to five gallons of water per minute. Information given in the report includes: 1. Water Standards 2. Treatment System Description 3. Based on the literature review, electrochemical precipitation and activated alumina adsorption were judged to be the most promising technologies for interim treatment of wastewater in SUMP 1727. Sections of the report discuss the following: (1) Raw water characteristics; (2) Proposed treatment levels for discharge to the RMA sanitary sewer; (3) Treatability test methods that were used to evaluate the two technologies; (4) Results of the tests; (5) Selection of alumina as the preferred treatment; (6) Conceptual design; (7); Costs.-BKA.
