Issued annually since 1946/47, the Yearbook is the principal reference work of the United Nations, providing a comprehensive, one-volume account of the Organization's work. It includes details of United Nations activities concerning trade, industrial development, natural resources, food, science and technology, social development, polulation, environment, human settlement, children and legal questions, along with information on the work of each specialized agency in the United Nations family.

The present publication is designed primarily to assist countries that do not have an appropriate authority and a specific set of standards for the consistent rendering of their geographical names. The information in the Manual consists of suggestions that should be useful to those intersted in ways to standardize their nation's geographical names

With the continuous expansion of technical capabilities and communication media, authoritative geographical names are sought for accurate reporting, geo-referencing and inclusion in geographical information systems. The present Reference Manual focuses on the technical aspects of geographical names standardization, including Romanization systems and toponymic data transfers and formats.
