Books on Textiles tend to focus solely on aesthetic or technical points of view. Designers’ understanding of special technical aspects of textile structure or the ability of researchers to grasp the design aspects would result in quantum leaps in innovations and creativity in the Textile domain. This book presents a holistic view integrating the viewpoints of designers and researchers. It presents previously unexplored features or possibilities, mainly in the field of textile structure constructions and characteristics. The main aim is a unique proper blending of both the technical and aesthetic sides of textile. Without compromising on the technicalities, it simplifies complex concepts to elevate the understanding of fashion designers. On the other hand, it also provides a viewpoint on aesthetics. The chapters are designed to provide a good balance of content for both fashion designers and professionals. The initial chapter sets the foundation of understanding with a healthy discussion about the latest technical trends of textiles’ functionalities and their new applications. A dedicated chapter discusses the practical use of lighting effects of side-emitting optical fibers in conjunction with color effects for textile design purposes. Further chapters deal with smart textiles design in the context of sensation and perception, basic aspects of textiles structures necessary for their rational design, and color characteristics of materials useful for designers. The book includes a special chapter on analyzing the business landscape of textile design. Overall, this book is expected to cater to the needs and give special knowledge important for both textile specialists and fashion designers.

This book highlights some aspects of processing, microstructure, and properties of materials in fibrous form, or from fibers, with wide applications for textile-oriented and technically oriented advanced products. Emphasis is placed on the physical and chemical nature of the processes, describing the behavior and properties of the investigated materials. The chapters describing the state and expected trends in selected areas summarize not only the published works but also the original results and the critical evaluation and generalization of basic knowledge. In addition to the preparation of materials with new effects, attention is focused on the development of new testing principles, the construction of special devices, and metrological aspects. Research activities cover all types of fibers with a clear shift toward synthetic and specialty fibers for non-clothing applications. This is in line with the current development trend in the field of high-performance fibers, mainly for use as reinforcement in various composite materials and functional fibers for smart textiles. The area of fibrous materials covered in this book is indeed very large. Compressing the basic available information in a reasonable space was therefore a difficult task. The goal in writing this book was to provide a broad area of different results so that the book is suitable for anyone who is generally interested in fibrous materials and their applications for various purposes.

Excerpt from Textile Design: Pure and Applied On the other hand, many cloths are produced in which the weave structure or build of the fabric is of vital importance: in which the whole effect depends upon the method of interlacing the warp and the weft in the process of weaving. Such cloths are made from yarns of every well-known kind of textile fibre. Designers of these fabrics must have an intimate knowledge of cloth structure, and should thoroughly understand how to make due allowance for the various restrictions imposed upon them by the particular type of loom in which the designs are to be developed. For such men a purely art training is not an absolute necessity, unless, indeed, when they are engaged in the preparation of the more elaborately figured kinds. Where coloured yarns are extensively used, as in the woollen, worsted, and silk industries, 3. Sound knowledge of the principles of colouring and their application to the blending of the fibres, and to the arrangement of the coloured yarns, is essential; while, for certain kinds of cloth, e.g., tapestries, brocades, etc., the designer is expected to be conversant with all branches - art, colour, weave structure, and processes of production. There have been important recent developments in the production and application of three dimensional fabrics. These 3D textile structures have great potential for new fabrics and textile applications. 3D Fibrous Assemblies summarizes key developments and their applications in the textile industry. The book begins with an introductory chapter which defines the concepts and types of 3D fibrous assemblies. The book then discusses how 3D fabrics can be applied in textiles products. These range from composites and protective clothing to medical textiles. The remainder of the book reviews the two main 3D fabrics; multi-axial warp knitted fabrics and multi-layer woven fabrics. Themes such as structure, manufacture, properties and modeling are considered for both fabrics. Written by a distinguished author, 3D Fibrous Assemblies will be a pioneering guide for a broad spectrum of readers, ranging from fiber scientists and designers through to those involved in research and development of new generation textile products.
