Fiction. The stories in FAST MACHINE come in three sizes: flash, regular, and too-long-for-journal-publication. Some were previously published. Some are brand-spanking new. The opening story, "State Liquor," concerns a twenty-five-year-old woman and her eighteen-year-old husband trying to buy alcohol on their way to their strip mall jobs, the afternoon of their wedding. In "Fistful," a pregnant teenager gets revenge on the young man who both impregnated and beat her, before leaving town with another man. In "Habitrail," a woman returns home after the death of her father, to find her husband in communication with the television set and a god he calls Chaos, rather than her. There are over ninety stories in this collection. Repeated themes include: driving, smoking, teenagers, drinking, escape, the Midwest, masturbation, self-loathing, blood and loneliness.

This book presents the latest techniques for machine learning based data analytics on IoT edge devices. A comprehensive literature review on neural network compression and machine learning accelerator is presented from both algorithm level optimization and hardware architecture optimization. Coverage focuses on shallow and deep neural network with real applications on smart buildings. The authors also discuss hardware architecture design with coverage focusing on both CMOS based computing systems and the new emerging Resistive Random-Access Memory (RRAM) based systems. Detailed case studies such as indoor positioning, energy management and intrusion detection are also presented for smart buildings.

Deep learning is often viewed as the exclusive domain of math PhDs and big tech companies. But as this hands-on guide demonstrates, programmers comfortable with Python can achieve impressive results in deep learning with little math background, small amounts of data, and minimal code. How? With fastai, the first library to provide a consistent interface to the most frequently used deep learning applications. Authors Jeremy Howard and Sylvain Gugger, the creators of fastai, show you how to train a model on a wide range of tasks using fastai and PyTorch. You’ll also dive progressively further into deep learning theory to gain a complete understanding of the algorithms behind the scenes. Train models in computer vision, natural language processing, tabular data, and collaborative filtering Learn the latest deep learning techniques that matter most in practice Improve accuracy, speed, and reliability by understanding how deep learning models work Discover how to turn your models into web applications Implement deep learning algorithms from scratch Consider the ethical implications of your work Gain insight from the foreword by PyTorch cofounder, Soumith Chintala

The Workshop on Approximation and Online Algorithms (WAOA 2003) focused on the design and analysis of algorithms for online and computationally hard problems. Both kinds of problems have a large number of applications ar- ing from a variety of ?elds. The workshop also covered experimental research on approximation and online algorithms. WAOA 2003 took place in Budapest, Hungary, from September 16 to September 18. The workshop was part of the ALGO 2003 event, which also hosted ESA 2003, WABI 2003, and ATMOS 2003. TopicsofinterestforWAOA2003were:competitiveanalysis,inapproximab- ityresults, randomizationtechniques, approximationclasses, scheduling, coloring and partitioning, cuts and connectivity, packing and covering, geometric pr- lems, network design, and applications to game theory and ?nancial problems. In response to our call for papers we received 41 submissions. Each submission was reviewed by at least 3 referees, who judged the papers on originality, quality, and consistency with the topics of the conference. Based on these reviews the program committee selected 19 papers for presentation at the workshop and for publication in this proceedings. This volume contains the 19 selected papers and 5 invited abstracts from an ARACNE minisymposium which took place as part of WAOA.

This book provides insights and process details of how to design and build disruptive innovations, so that you are not flying blind or just throwing darts in an effort to pivot/expand to the online order fulfillment world. The fulfillment machine is the delivery side infrastructure of an online business, it is the physical and digital innovations which make it possible to immediately deliver customer orders. Customers want to order everything, while sitting on their couch and they want immediate fulfillment. Fast fulfillment is happening, and everyone knows that, but most are scared of it. Many experts describe the wonders of online retail, but none explains what fast fulfillment is or propose a solution to building a fast fulfillment machine. Managers are frustrated just reading about how great Amazon is, and how startups are innovating fantastic technology driven processes. Here is the book, written in a simple easy to read style which unravels the technical mystery of the fulfillment machine. It levels the knowledge field, reveals the secrets of fast fulfillment, and helps the reader construct a plan to innovate and be ready to face the disruptors. What is happening in retail is contagious across industries, there are no wide moats. Managers and engineers are rushing to redesign their supply chains into fast fulfillment machines. This book provides insights and process details of how to design and build disruptive innovations, so that you are not flying blind or just throwing darts in an effort to pivot/expand to the online order fulfillment world. The book does not story-tell the fast fulfillment machine, it is informative and instructive.

John von Neumann was perhaps the most influential mathematician of the twentieth century, especially if his broad influence outside mathematics is included. The present volume is the first substantial collection of (previously mainly unpublished) letters written by von Neumann to colleagues, friends, government officials, and others. The letters give us a glimpse of the thinking of John von Neumann about mathematics, physics, computer science, science management, education, consulting, politics, and war. Readers of quite diverse backgrounds will find much of interest in this first-hand look at one of the towering figures of twentieth century science.
