Excerpt from Farm Management Farm Management is the study of the business principles in farming. It may be defined as the science of the organization and management of a farm enterprise for the purpose of securing the greatest continuous profit. Successful farming requires good judgment in choosing a farm and in deciding on a type of farming. It demands clear business organization and management for the efficient use of capital, labor, horses, and machinery. It requires good judgment in buying and selling. The change from cheap land, hand tools, and farming to raise ones own food and clothing, to farming as a commercial undertaking has come upon us so suddenly that business principles are not always well understood by farmers. Nor do those who understand the application of such principles to city conditions often know how to apply them on the farm. Long ages of experience and a generation of scientific research have resulted in a fund of popular knowledge on how to raise crops and animals. But there is less background of tradition concerning business methods on the farm, and colleges have given little attention to this kind of problems. The success of the individual farmer is as much dependent on the application of business principles as it is on crop yields and production of animals. Excerpt from Farm-Management Extension, 1914-1924 The first group is handled almost entirely through a card file in the office. This shows when each man's record is due to close, and other facts. A letter is sent each farmer near the end Of his year, inclosing an application card which he fill out and returns for a new book. When the record closes he is forwarded another book and at the same time requested to lend us the completed book for a county summary. Most of the new cooperators are obtained at the community planning meetings when the project is explained, leaders chosen, new men enrolled as cooperators, and arrangements made for further subject-matter meetings. Circular letters were also used, prepared by the farm-management specialist. For the new men, assistance in starting their accounts was given, largely in group meetings. An accounts started card was used, being sent to all men who were not inter viewed, with the request that they return the card if the book had been started. We like this system very much, as the response was prompt and permitted an accurate record to' be) kept. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
