Excerpt from Faded Leaves Not as Where hawthorn snows deride December's coverlet of rime, And the lush flowers conspire to hide The brand of Earth's primeval crime; Where hangs along each lapsing stream, AS myrrh o'er some cathedral floor. Excerpt from Fallen Leaves A Prayer (Written on my Twenty-first Birthday) Dear Father, who with guidance firm My childish footsteps stayed, Who fed my youth's unfolding mind, Now give my manhood aid. Those years are past, and by man's law In man's estate I stand; Help me to use man's highest strength, To lend the weak a hand. Give unto others worldly fame, Me an unselfish heart, Strong to sustain, tender to love, Give me the Christ-like part. Help me to do the things I should, Free from Temptation's ban; Help me to be God's noblest work, An honest Christian man. Amen. Excerpt from Stray Leaves Stray leaves of early Spring, By other leaves and fruit of Summer shaded, Too early in their first fair blossoming, Now almost faded. I scarce might offer these poor leaves to thee, Did not thine eyes their earlier beauty see. Stray leaves of later bloom, When life's long Summer day hath told its story, And Autumn comes, with less of sweet perfume But mellower glory. I scarce to thee these russet leaves may give, But that thy dear approval bids them live. Stray leaves from distant hills Or dales, where we have often stroll'd together Olive and Palm, grown near Italian rills, Or spines of Heather. Memorials sweet I could not bring to thee, Had not love's fingers gathered them for me. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Gathered Leaves From the Prose of Mary E. Coleridge Faded leaves are falling, Birds are on the wing, All that dies in Autumn Lives again in Spring. The quiet and distinction of her gift are as visible here as in her maturer work. There are no striking images, no youthful crudities. Restraint and discretion were her heritage. What was perhaps more remarkable than her imagina tion - for many children are imaginative - was her quickly developed power of scholarship. When she was about twelve, the shape of the Hebrew letters attracted her, and she begged her father to teach her the language. By the time she was nineteen she was well versed in it, as well as in German, French, Italian and a little later she became a keen reader of Greek. She was not one of those literary scholars who make only for a general impression, for colour more than for form. She was the most careful of students, allowing no detail to be neglected, accurate and reverentially cautious, with a real love for the niceties of learning. Excerpt from When Leaves Were Green, Vol. 1 of 3: A Novel Eleven o'clock on a bright June morning. A stretch of wood on the northern slopes of the South Downs, and Glyn Beverley sketching in the midst of the wild-roses, honeysuckles, and dappled foxgloves of early summer. A lovely spot whereon to set up an easel. A grassy knoll, bright with flowers. A wealth of leafage on three sides. On the fourth, through a gap in the foliage, a glorious view of the Downs, fading away into the blue of infinite distance.
