The present volume focuses on a special topic – on the one hand, found at all levels of language organization, and presumably present in language since its origin. On the other hand, this issue – extension – has only relatively recently become the subject of serious study and, as such, it is still a largely unexplored, fresh, and exciting object of linguistic pursuit. Equipped with multiple linguistic tools, the contributors investigate, among others, such facets of extension as its regularities, directions, possible limits, and methodologies that can best account for it. By doing so, they provide significant insights into the following research areas: the multidimensional nature of the lexical item; the influence that metaphorical and metonymic extension of lexical items has on these items’ grammar; as well as the semantics and, in particular, the polysemy of constructions. Richly illustrated with examples from several languages, including English, French, Polish, Russian, and German, this volume enhances the understanding of the nature of extension.

Since its legal foundation in 1993, the European Union has been challenged by three concurring developments. Its decision-making bodies groaned under burgeoning legislative activity, and Eastern enlargement was expected to limit law-making efficiency. At the same time, European citizens grew wary of EU politics and increasing integration. This book explains how European governments handled these challenges and, step-by-step, agreed on significant reforms which led to the signing of the Lisbon Treaty in December 2007. Drawing on unique survey data, European Integration and Its Limits provides a solid empirical analysis of the three most important intergovernmental conferences. It shows how far voters and political parties have been able to influence European treaty reforms, and it scrutinises the mechanisms underlying intergovernmental treaty negotiations in an ever-growing Union. The book discusses the domestic position formation process as well as the dynamics of intergovernmental bargaining. Ultimately, it explains European integration from Maastricht to Lisbon.

As the world’s coastal states go about dividing up the ocean floor, the work of the Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf plays an increasingly important role. The Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf: Law and Legitimacy examines the Commission from two different but interrelated perspectives: a legal analysis of the Commission’s decision-making; and a study of normative legitimacy related to the Commission and its procedures. Insights into the history of the development of the concept of the continental shelf in the law of the sea are offered, including an explanation of how the institutionalized method for ascertaining continental shelf limits in the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea came into being. Through a deep-ranging analysis of the Commission and its work, the book introduces a framework for assessing best practices, and will serve as a useful reference for academics, scientists and policymakers alike.
