With the rapid growth of corpus-based translations studies (CBTS) over recent years, this book offers a timely overview of the field today. This collection of articles highlights some of the challenges facing English Corpus Linguistics at the beginning of the 21st century and shows how these challenges are being addressed by researchers.

Since its beginnings in the late 1980s, the field of Learner Corpus Research (LCR) has been continuously evolving and thereby widening its scope. LCR is rapidly closing gaps within its original scope by expanding on the languages, language mediums (spoken vs written) and learner types covered, and it is turning its attention to ever-emerging new research questions and phenomena which arise at the crossroads with neighboring disciplines. In fact, by embracing e.g. the latest technical developments in Natural Language Processing and Computer Science as well as by adopting state-of-the-art research methodologies used in Corpus Linguistics which include sophisticated statistical methods of data analysis, LCR is dipping into new interdisciplinary subjects with curiosity and expanding its research scope and methodological repertoire. This volume combines selected research papers from the 4th LCR conference hosted by Eurac Research in Bolzano/Bozen (Italy) in October 2017. All contributions in this volume build on the topics of previous LCR conference volumes, and enrich them with their research. The contributions are arranged thematically and refer to the following ve LCR topics: (1) analysis of learner data in spoken language, (2) analysis of learner data in corpora of other languages than English, (3) analysis of learner data of young learners, (4) LCR, language learning and pedagogical applications, and (5) LCR and automatic language modeling. The assembled papers introduce innovative research strands, present original data and research findings, and discuss latest desiderata within the five thematic focal points of the book.

Throughout history, linguists and literary scholars have been impelled by curiosity about particular linguistic or literary phenomena to seek to observe them in action in original texts. The fruits of each earlier enquiry in turn nourish the desire to continue to acquire knowledge, through further observation of newer linguistic facts. As time goes by, the corpus linguist operates increasingly in the awareness of what has gone before. Corpus Linguistics, thirty years on, is less an innocent sortie into corpus territory on the basis of a hunch than an informed, critical reassessment of existing analytical orthodoxy, in the light of new data coming on stream. This volume comprises twenty-two articles penned by members of the ICAME (International Computer Archive of Modern and Mediaeval English) association, which together provide a critical and informed reappraisal of the facts, data, methods and tools of Corpus Linguistics which are available today. Authors reconsider the boundaries of the discipline, exploring its areas of commonality with Sociolinguistics, Language Variation, Discourse Linguistics, and Lexical Statistics and showing how that commonality is potentially of immense benefit to practitioners in the fields concerned. Corpus-based Approaches to Contrastive Linguistics and Translation Studies presents readers with up-to-date research in corpus-based contrastive linguistics and translation studies, showing the high degree of complementarity between the two fields in terms of research methodology, interests and objectives. Offering theoretical, descriptive and applied perspectives, the articles show how translation and contrastive approaches to grammar, lexis and discourse can be harmoniously combined through the use of monolingual, bilingual and multilingual corpora and how contrastive information needs to inform translation research and vice versa. The notion of contrastive linguistics adopted here is broad; thus, alongside comparisons of Malay/English idioms and the French imparfait and its English equivalents, there are articles comparing different varieties of French, and sign language with spoken language. This collection should be of interest to researchers in corpus linguistics, contrastive linguistics and translation studies. In addition, the section on corpus-based teaching applications will be of great value to teachers of translation and contrastive linguistics.

Linguistically annotated corpora are becoming a central part of the corpus linguistics field. One of their main strengths is the level of searchability they offer, but with the annotation come problems of the initial complexity of queries and query tools. This book gives a full, pedagogic account of this burgeoning field. Beginning with an overview of corpus linguistics, its prerequisites and goals, the book then introduces linguistically annotated corpora. It explores the different levels of linguistic annotation, including morphological, parts of speech, syntactic, semantic and discourse-level, as well as advantages and challenges for such annotations. It covers the main annotated corpora for English, the Penn Treebank, the International Corpus of English, and OntoNotes, as well as a wide range of corpora for other languages. In its third part, search strategies required for different types of data are explored. All chapters are accompanied by exercises and by sections on further reading.
