These proceedings represent the work of contributors to the 7th International Conference on Gender Research (ICGR 2024), hosted by The Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona, Spain on 25-26 April 2024. The Conference Chair was Professor Carmen-Pilar Martí Ballester, from the Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona, Spain. ICGR is a well-established event on the academic research calendar and now in its 7th year the key aim of this diverse conference is to provide an opportunity for participants from different backgrounds and cultures to share ideas and meet the people who hold them. The scope of papers ensured an interesting two days. The subjects covered in these proceedings illustrate the wide range of topics that fall into this important and ever-growing area of research.

This dissertation explored how well immigrants in the United States learn from American political news. Predictions in this online experiment were based on a 1990 survey in which Korean Americans with lower language proficiency and shorter length of stay in the U.S. demonstrated higher political knowledge scores when they reported relying on television news instead of print news. To test the findings of the 1990 study, news media were operationalized through modality as two symbol systems: words, which need to be learned to be understood, and pictures, which need to be recognized. One-hundred-forty-six individuals born in 52 countries completed the study in which each participant was exposed to one of the three conditions representing either television or radio or print news. Data demonstrated that immigrants with lower self-reported language proficiency correctly recognized more multiple-choice answers to questions about stories from television news in comparison to print news. This finding establishes a causal relationship between the presence of pictures in television's two-channel stream and better outcomes of memory about news for immigrants with weaker English language skills. Years of education in the U.S. emerged as the only reliable predictor of comprehension. Furthermore, in the television condition, immigrants with higher language proficiency correctly recognized about half-an-answer fewer than did immigrants with lower language proficiency. Findings suggest that television news is indeed beneficial for immigrants' learning about American politics, yet it becomes less beneficial once immigrants' competence increase.

In the present-day context of cross-linguistic perspectives on language acquisition, The Acquisition of Dutch offers a much needed overview of the wealth of Dutch child language research that was hitherto lacking. Its comprehensive coverage in terms of topics, its many new theoretical contributions and its focus on providing a solid basis for cross-linguistic comparisons will be of interest to linguists and psycholinguists studying child language everywhere.The volume consists of four thematic chapters preceded by an introductory overview. The thematic chapters cover early speech development in the first year of life, the acquisition of phonology, the lexicon and syntax. The consolidated list of references cover most of the work on Dutch child language in the last few decades.

This study examines the challenges in acquiring English language proficiency among Chinese immigrant women in Metro Vancouver and the impact on their social and economic integration in the community. This research suggests that these women can benefit from informal language learning. Through semi-structured interviews and photovoice research, the women share their experiences of language barriers and the impact on daily lives. The thematic analysis shows that women with limited English language abilities face four major challenges: access to public transportation, financial literacy, lack of information and cultural barriers. In addition to formal language training, women want more opportunities to practice their speaking and listening outside of classrooms and interact with others in social settings. As a result, I propose three policy options to support informal learning: Volunteer Mentoring Program, Women's Conversation Circles and Interactive Learning Program. The study recommends Women's Conversation Circles to improve immigrants' English language skills.
