Excerpt from Experiments in Pig Feeding It has already been proposed that a test of what is called a com posite sample of the milk is sufficiently accurate and requires much less work and expense than a test of the milk brought by each patron daily. This composite sample can be obtained by putting into a quart glass fruit jar, which is a convenient receptacle for this purpose, a small quantity of the milk brought by the patron each day. At the end of the week the jar contains a mixture of the milk brought during the seven days, and a test of this mixture (composite sample) is to take the place of the daily test. From the record of the pounds of milk brought by each patron during the week and the test of his composite sample for the week a sim ple calculation shows the pounds of butter fat supplied to the creamery by each patron, and for that he is paid. The accuracy of one test by the composite sample, as a substitute for seven or more separate tests of the samples, depends, when made as de tailed in the following pages, on the uniformity in quantity and quality of the milk from which the composite sample is made up; but, as will be seen, the method is sufficiently accurate for all practical purposes at a creamery. The houses, self-feeders, and water troughs were similar In 8126, construction, shape, and position. Before being put into the feeders, the feed was weighed and thoroughly mixed. Any part refused was deducted from the original weight. When two lots were pastured at the same time, the pasture was similar in kind and in area. The pigs used in these experiments Were purebred duroc-jerseys and Poland Chinas, bred and raised at this Station. At the outset, the lots were divided as uniformly as possible, according to weight, thrift, sex, age, and breed. The pigs of the first experiment were farrowed in September or early in October, 1932; those of the second, in March, 1933. Both groups had been fed normal diets and had free access to pasture with their mothers before weaning. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Pig Feeding Experiments: Part 1. Results of Feeding Skim-Milk and Corn Meal and Middilngs; Part 2. Digestion Experiments While the original plan of these experiments covered only the financial side of the question, later it was found desirable to conduct digestion experiments to determine just how much of the food eaten was actually utilized by the pigs. This work was put into the hands of the Station chemist, Prof. Morse, whose te port is to be found in Part II of this Bulletin. The six pigs selected for this work were bought of a neigh boring farmer, August 24, 1889, at which time they were six weeks old. While of no particular breed, they evidently had a good proportion of Chester White blood, and proved rapid grow ers and were remarkably uniform in shape and weight.
