Master’s degree programmes are on the rise, attracting growing numbers of international students who speak English as a second or additional language. Experiencing Master’s Supervision: Perspectives of International Students and their Supervisors explores the experiences of supervising and being supervised at Master’s level, charting the difficulties and joys of learning for second language speakers of English while based at a UK university. The authors report the findings of a year of studying both supervisees and their supervisors in four different departments in the social sciences and humanities at a UK research-intensive university. Using a multiple case study approach, and examining supervision in its natural context, this book presents rich descriptions of five case studies: three student-supervisor dyads and two cases of individual students. Analysing rich, first-hand narratives, chapters identify key aspects of satisfaction and dissatisfaction through the eyes of the participants, focusing upon expectations, supervision styles, feedback and students’ support networks, and discussing the broader implications for university and departmental policy makers, responsible for guidelines and requirements. This book contains important insights into the supervisory experience at Master’s level and will appeal to researchers, academics and postgraduate students in the fields of higher education, TESOL, TEFL/TESL and applied linguistics. This book will also be a useful resource for supervisors, leaders of training sessions for supervisors, and for postgraduate directors and teaching committees at universities who develop supervisory guidelines and preparatory sessions for Master’s students.

Recognising that graduate supervisory practice is not an abstracted academic pursuit, but an activity that is subjectively bounded by content and context, impacted by the experiences and beliefs of supervisee and supervisor, this text explores the unique dynamics of graduate supervision in the Global South, as perceived and experienced by students and academics within those same contexts. Bringing together contributions which reflect a rich diversity of perspectives on supervisory practices at regional universities in the Caribbean and South Pacific, Graduate Research Supervision in the Developing World explores how supervisors navigate unscripted supervisory terrain; contextualise supervisory best practices; establish roles and relationships, and work to understand supervisees’ needs. By highlighting the effect on graduate supervision of complex sociocultural interplay and the relationship between learning environments and student success, contributors look to locate best practices through analyses of stories of success and failure. As the contributors demonstrate, there is a need to restructure the standardised operation of graduate supervision across diverse faculties. This text will be of great interest to graduate supervisors and their supervisees as well as scholars in the fields of continuing professional development and higher education, in international and comparative education and Sociology of Education.

The Contemporary Relational Supervisor is an empirically based, academically sophisticated, and learner-friendly book on the cutting edge of couple and family therapy supervision. Appropriate for master’s and doctoral level students, as well as experienced clinicians who wish to learn about supervision, it emphasizes system and relational thinking and intervention, while privileging the diversity of training system members, their realities, experiences, and interpretations of life. The authors are attuned throughout the text to how and where clinical training and services are provided, and to whom, and provide detailed literature reviews for readers. These factors assist their discussion of the socio-historic development of the AAMFT supervision designation, and the fundamentals, contexts, philosophy, relationships, and pragmatics of CFT supervision. They also discuss major models and approaches, evaluation, ethical and legal issues, and therapist development. Perhaps most important is their presentation of methods that help tailor and extend supervision practices to meet the clinical, institutional, and economic realities that CF therapists navigate. Readers are engaged by the discussions and exercises at the end of each chapter, which help them to feel more grounded in a topic, to have their own voices heard, and to be granted insight through experiencing multiple realities. This valuable reference prepares the next wave of cutting-edge CFT supervisors–those who are knowledgeable, skilled, and realistically confident.
