This book is recommended to those working to end modern day slavery where children are the victims and losers, particularly in hidden employment like domestic work in the developing countries. In Nigeria, children are recruited from rural to urban areas to work as domestic servants with false promises including child fosterage by clandestine agents. The study found that poverty among the rural families, compounded by large family size, increasing number of orphans and vulnerable children, low rate of school enrollment, poor attitude to girl child education and the growing demand for domestic workers by working class families in urban areas as the root causes of the problem. The study recommended in addition to poverty alleviation measures, a strong awareness creation to change mindset about children's exchange in the society and suggested some remedial measures for the prevention of recruitment of children for domestic work as well as rescue abused and traumatized victims now in the urban areas.

For the last two decades, child domestic work carried out in Nigeria as well as in other countries in Africa, Latin America and Asia, has been given increasing attention by international policy makers and scientists. Yet, the research mainly focuses on the living and working conditions of these children, which also forms part of this book. However, in addition, political and pedagogical measures of intervention employed on international, national and local levels on child domestic work are also at the centre of analysis. Against the background of post-colonial theory the author studies the effects of social modernisation in Nigeria as a rapidly growing national economy on child domestic work and historically retraces the origins of this form of child work back to indigenous modes of socialisation and social security within the (pre-colonial) Nigerian extended family network. The research is based on field work in Nigeria, including interviews and documentary analysis.

Sustaining the rural and urban populations of the developing world has been identified as a key global challenge for the twenty-first century. Rural-Urban Interaction in the Developing World is an introduction to the relationships between rural and urban places in the developing world and shows that not all their aspects are as obvious as migration from country to city. There is now a growing realization that rural-urban relations are far more complex. Using a wealth of student-friendly features including boxed case studies, discussion questions and annotated guides to further reading, this innovative book places rural-urban interactions within a broader context, thus promoting a clearer understanding of the opportunities, as well as the challenges, that rural-urban interactions represent.

This publication sheds light on the magnitude of domestic work, a sector often "invisible" behind the doors of private households and unprotected by national legislation. The adoption of new international labour standards on domestic work (Convention No. 189 and its accompanying Recommendation No. 201) by the ILO at its 100th International Labour Conference in June 2011 represents a key milestone on the path to the realisation of decent work for domestic workers. This volume presents national statistics and new global and regional estimates on the number of domestic workers. It shows that domestic workers represent a significant share of the labour force worldwide and that domestic work is an important source of wage employment for women, especially in Latin America and Asia. It also examines the extent of inclusion or exclusion of domestic workers from key working conditions laws. In particular, it analyses how many domestic workers are covered by working time provisions, minimum wage legislation and maternity protection. The results demonstrate that under current national laws, substantial gaps in protection still remain. The volume concludes with a summary of the main findings and a reflection on the relevance of the newly adopted international standards to extend legal protection to domestic workers.

In the current scholarship on paid domestic work in India, various studies examine work relations and their role in transforming the geography of the city and the intimate space of an employer's home into a site of power and control (Qayum and Ray 2003). However, there is little in the existing discourse that looks at domestic workers' experience of work and the negotiations therein. In metropolitan cities such as Delhi, marked by increasing antagonistic politics and socio-spatial segregation, domestic work is one of the ways through which the rich and the poor interact with each other. It is an activity through which spaces that are not otherwise accessible to the poor become so, at least physically. In this thesis, I study how domestic workers narrate paid domestic work as a livelihood option. The thesis draws upon an original study of domestic workers in New Delhi, India and consists of twenty-one in-depth interviews with women domestic workers at three different localities of Delhi. By taking a closer look at workers' specific practices, underlying structures and norm-breaking acts, and the role of caste, class, gender and sexuality, I seek to understand how domestic workers, both within and beyond their workplace, experience everyday life. Domestic workers are not passive, but active beings who challenge and subvert oppression and unequal relations by employing strategies of everyday resistance. The findings demonstrate that a change of socio-spatial location that is from one's own home to others' changes the meaning and worth of the work significantly. The shame and stigma that domestic workers in India experience is not simply a reflection of their inner life and self but is also sustained by external, social structures and processes. Additionally, workers' labour market choices are shaped and affected by the need to balance paid and unpaid work and their familiarity with the worksite, nature of employers and experience at workplace.
