The objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) has become widely employed in intensive care medicine (ICM) exams such as the UK Final Fellowship of Intensive Care Medicine (FFICM), the European Diploma of Intensive Care (EDIC) exam, or the Australia and New Zealand Fellowship of the College of Intensive Care Medicine (CICM). This book is not only an essential tool for the rehearsal of OSCEs in preparation for these exams, but also for American and Indian exams, and any other exams within the field of intensive care medicine. The OSCE is a style of examination that requires the candidate to present specific information in a short space of time matched to a prescriptive mark scheme. This book allows candidates preparing for an ICM OSCE to format their knowledge for this type of examination whilst practising and rehearsing against time. The 60 OSCE stations provide a broad array of topics from past exams ranging across the training ICM curriculums. The mark schemes are presented in a short, punctuated form allowing the candidate access to important points, ideal at the sharp end of an exam campaign. The 5 sets of OSCE exams are designed to run as a set of 12. Each set will have an array of clinical scenarios requiring swift assessment, diagnosis, recommendations for investigations and management, whilst also exploring aspects of pathophysiology. There are a number of data-interpretation tools that are incorporated into clinical scenarios as well as standalone stations for electrocardiogram and radiology analysis. This book is an important preparatory tool crucial to the armamentarium of any candidate preparing for an ICM exam.

This book provides 300 practice MCQs divided into three practice papers. Correct answers follow, accompanied by short referenced notes drawing from recent important journal articles, major critical care textbooks and selected internet resources. Since there is no other dedicated intensive care MCQ book on the market, this book is relevant to the following groups: junior intensive care trainees, senior intensive care nursing staff wishing to enhance their medical knowledge, intensive care consultants as a teaching aid and trainees preparing for professional examinations. This MCQ book will also be ideal in preparation for the European Diploma in Intensive Care Medicine (EDIC) Part 1 examination, as the questions are matched as closely as possible in style and difficulty to those in the EDIC Part 1. The EDIC is an internationally recognised qualification for medical trainees in intensive care, set by the European Society for Intensive Care Medicine (ESICM). It is a two-part examination consisting of a 100-question multiple choice paper (Part 1) and a clinical and viva voce examination (Part 2). To ensure relevance, the questions are designed with reference to the training syllabus provided by the ESICM.

This well-illustrated book provides detailed guidance on all aspects of physical examination in patients requiring emergency or intensive care. After an introductory section covering basic principles and the recognition of pre-terminal signs, the approach to examination of individual organ systems is clearly explained. Examination schemes are then presented for particular conditions or settings, including respiratory distress, shock, neurological disease, trauma, suspected infection, and cardiac arrest. The skill of physical examination has become the forgotten art of medicine in both undergraduate and postgraduate studies. Furthermore, most books on the topic have so far focused on examination practices applicable to non-critically ill patients. In emergency and intensive care medicine, however, a different approach and sometimes also different examination techniques are required due to the life-threatening disease process. In summarizing knowledge and providing guidance on physical examination in this specific subgroup of patients, this book will meet the needs of all physicians and allied health care professionals involved in the care of critically ill patients.
