In the 1980s, The Nature Conservancy began work on the fast-growing Outer Banks by protecting Nags Head Woods. One of the last intact maritime forests on the East Coast, the Woods was in danger of becoming a housing development. In the late nineteenth century Nags Head Woods was home to about forty families and to this day remnants of their time there can be seen during a walk in the preserve. Based on oral histories, "Everyone Helped His Neighbor" documents the social and cultural history of a community that worked the land and waters of this unique place. Originally published in 1987, this reissue edition contains a foreword by David S. Cecelski and an afterword by the authors.

The Outer Banks of North Carolina attract those with a conviction to dream and do. Explorers, pirates, lifesavers and the world's first pilots decorate the halls of local history. Some of the Outer Banks' greatest accomplishments are due to daring women who pushed the odds. Eleanor Dare created a new life amidst a doomed colonial expedition, Chrissy Bowser found her freedom as the Civil War rocked Roanoke Island, and Irene Tate watched the Wright brothers assemble their glider in her front yard then went on to become a record-setting pilot herself. The women in this book fought for their homes. They stepped outside the traditional roles of their day and age, seeking to preserve its history and heritage. They saved sand dunes and moved lighthouses. Local author Hannah West tells the stories of these remarkable women.

I wrote Be the Parent of Your Child’s Dreams because with so much media and institutional emphasis on labeling, controlling, and punishing our children, we as a society had lost touch with the most important element; to love our children. We can learn to practice principles of recovery such as honesty, compassion, open mindedness, forgiveness, acceptance, and unconditional love with our own children. In Be the Parent of Your Child’s Dreams, the focus is on us – as parents- to bring our best selves to every moment and every interaction with our children. Each daily reflection illustrates principles that parents, whether in recovery or not, can incorporate into our lives. I want to thank all of my family members and friends who contributed to the writing of Be the Parent of Your Child’s Dreams.
