Primarily, this Index serves as a register to the microfiche edition Biographical archive of the classical world (ISBN 3598339794: DEM 20,400), which contains biographical articles from 87 English, German, French, Latin and Greek reference books amounting to 195 volumes published between 1820 and 1989. Thanks to its highly condensed form the Index greatly aids the search for and selection of individuals listed in the Archive. Furthermore, as a work of its own right, the Index represents a highly valuable tool for biographical research: information given by the Index leads to the immediate identification of the person in question as well as his/her historical period.
