Cet ouvrage fait le point sur l'état des recherches et des pratiques d'éveil aux langues et d'autres approches plurielles – intercompréhension entre langues voisines, didactique intégrée des langues – qui, toutes, impliquent simultanément plusieurs langues et variétés culturelles dans l'enseignement-apprentissage.

Within the scope of today’s globalisation, linguistic diversity is a given fact of the world we live in. In several educational contexts in Europe, language awareness (LA) activities have been introduced with the objective to prepare pupils cognitively, socially and/or critically for life as multilingual, open minded and/or empowered citizens in a diverse world. Despite previous research in various contexts, the concept of LA remains problematic: a generally accepted, evidence-based conceptualisation is missing. This confronts both research and education with a challenge: in order to develop LA activities, implement them successfully in educational contexts and achieve the expected outcomes, we should know what the concept stands for, how it works and why we would choose to implement it in classrooms (or not). This volume focuses on three apparent simple questions: what, how and why? The first question – what? – refers to the concept(ual mess) of LA. The second question – how? – refers to the implementation of LA activities in several educational contexts. The third question – why? – is a recurrent theme running through all the chapters and deals with a reflection on the way we deal (un)consciously with LA activities in education.

La prise en compte par l'École de la pluralité et de la variation linguistiques est d'importance centrale ; non seulement pour l'accès aux connaissances, le développement des compétences, l'ouverture à la diversité des cultures, mais aussi en vue de la construction identitaire des jeunes et du vivre ensemble en société. C'est pourquoi, dans le cadre des enseignements et des dispositifs institutionnels existants, il importe de dégager les voies d'une éducation langagière plus intégrée...

Plurilingual communication is common practice in most urban areas. Societal domains such as business and science nowadays see themselves as international, and plurilingual communication is the rule rather than the exception. But how do other players in critical domains of modern societies, and more specifically, in education react to this situation? This volume of the Hamburg Studies in Linguistic Diversity (HSLD) series explores this question along three major lines. One group of contributions sheds light on educational policies in Europe and beyond. A second group of contributions elucidates what interaction and communication practices develop in multilingual contexts. The focus is on school settings. Thirdly, we present articles that discuss the effects of plurilingual settings and plurilingual practices on language development. As a whole this volume shows how linguistic diversity shapes a central domain of our societies, namely education, and how it also impacts upon the development of the individuals interacting in this domain.

Interest in Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL), in Europe and beyond, has increased exponentially since it first appeared on the scene in Europe in the early 1990s. CLIL has grown to become a much-discussed topic of language education today, with the number of publications pertaining to the field continuing to increase. Researchers, teachers, teacher trainers, course planners and others involved in CLIL are constantly searching for new studies to help them understand how CLIL is evolving and how best it can be implemented. As the concept is now informing the pedagogical principles of different educational realities, research and reflection are now required to further understand its potential and implications, its inherent difficulties and possible applications. This volume was conceived with this idea in mind. The book primarily covers three macro areas: learning, teaching and training. It provides insight into the latest areas of research and reflection that are characterizing the CLIL field in the current decade. The wide range of topics covered reveal, for example, a shift in interest towards CLIL at the tertiary level, focusing on lecturer and student perceptions and problems.

Intégrer la diversité linguistique et culturelle, notamment en s'appuyant sur des langues moins répandues ou minorées, dans les perspectives de l'éducation à la diversité, soulève une série de questions sur les enjeux, modalités et effets de cette inclusion. Des chercheurs et des enseignants se sont emparés de la question du bi-plurilinguisme et de l'interculturel en élaborant des analyses et des préconisations adaptées à des sociétés plurielles et à l'éducation à cette diversité.
