Fire safety is a major concern in many industries, particularly as there have been significant increases in recent years in the quantities of hazardous materials in process, storage or transport. Plants are becoming larger and are often situated in or close to densely populated areas, and the hazards are continually highlighted with incidents such as the fires and explosions at the Piper Alpha oil and gas platform, and the Enschede firework factory. As a result, greater attention than ever before is now being given to the evaluation and control of these hazards. In a comprehensive treatment of the subject unavailable elsewhere, this book describes in detail the applications of hazard and risk analysis to fire safety, going on to develop and apply quantification methods. It also gives an explanation in quantitative terms of improvements in fire safety in association with the costs that are expended in their achievement. Furthermore, a quantitative approach is applied to major fire and explosion disasters to demonstrate crucial faults and events. Featuring: Full international coverage and a review of several major fires and explosion disasters. Presentation of the properties and science of fire including the latest research. Detailed coverage of the performance of fire safety measures. This is an essential book for practitioners in fire safety engineering, loss prevention professionals, technical personnel in insurance companies as well as academics involved in fire science and postgraduate students. This book is also a useful reference for fire safety officers, building designers, engineers in the process industries, safety practitioners and risk assessment consultants.

This report is the product of a conference held on June 1, 2, and 3, 1980 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The participants in the conference were brought together to discuss guidelines for fire emergency plans in group homes for the developmentally disabled. Participants included a broad cross section of those concerned about fire safety in group homes for the developmentally disabled, including fire protection engineers, group home owners and operators, fire service personnel, as well as experts in training group home staff and in developmental disabilites, insurance, and behavior in fire. This report contains some of the substance of their discussions. The guidelines provided in this report include suggestions regarding training programs and facility fire emergency plans. A checklist for both local fire service personnel and group home staff is provided to assist these groups in developing adequate fire emergency plans. Recomendations are made in the areas of information availability, incentive systems, and evaluation procedures.

New fire safety rules affecting all non-domestic premises in England and Wales will come into force on 1 October 2006, in accordance with the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 (S.I. 2005/1541, ISBN 0110729455). This is one of a series of 11 publications which sets out recommendations and guidance for employers, managers, occupiers and owners of particular types of premises on how to carry out a fire risk assessment and how to identify general fire precautions required (including fire detection and warning systems, firefighting equipment, escape routes, signs and training). This guide covers premises where the main use of the building or part of the building is a theatre, cinema, concert hall or combination of these. As well as purpose-built premises, this includes buildings converted for such use. Other guides in the series cover temporary structures used for these purposes: guides for small/medium (ISBN 1851128204) and large (ISBN 1851128212) places of assembly. If the premises are part of, or related to the following, then the relevant guides should also be consulted: educational facilities (ISBN 1851128190), shopping centres (ISBN 1851128158), include sleeping accommodation (ISBN 1851128174), open air events or venues (ISBN 1851128239).
