An evaluation of NDT equipment and acquisition of a Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD) for the Illinois Department of Transportation was accomplished. This was followed by an extensive testing program using the FWD to evaluate concrete pavements in Illinois. Test results were evaluated and procedures developed for testing and evaluation of jointed and continuously reinforced concrete pavements. Results show that some causes of incipient distresses can be detected using the FWD device including subgrade strength, loss of load transfer and development of voids. Recommendations for rehabilitations are presented in the final report.

The report presents the results obtained from the soniscope instrument for use in the nondestructive testing of portland-cement concrete pavements. Essentially, the instrument was tested to determine if consistent velocity measurements could be obtained with the transducers in a position vertical on the prestressed, reinforced, and plain concrete pavements. Also, of interest during the investigation was the maximum distance through portland-cement concrete for which consistent velocity measurements could be obtained. (Author).

The 29 papers discuss analytical models and techniques, measurement and calculation techniques in the field and laboratory, problems and errors associated with backcalculation methods and design parameters, and testing for other pavement uses. This book gives information on non destructive techniques for assessment of concrete structures. It synthesizes the best of international knowledge about what techniques can be used for assessing material properties (strength) and structural properties (geometry, defects...). It describes how the techniques can be used so as to answer a series of usual questions, highlighting their capabilities and limits, and providing advices for a better use of techniques. It also focuses on possible combinations of techniques so as to improve the assessment. It is based on many illustrative examples and give in each case references to standards and guidelines.
