Les développements récents en matière de technologie électronique ont permis d'envisager l'utilisation des réseaux locaux dans le domaine des applications temps réel. Des études montrant la faisabilité de telles applications sur le système d'exploitation 0S9/68000 de la société Américaine Microware ont été menées à bien selon les axes suivants.Le premier travail a été la réalisation d'une carte contrôleur de réseau Ethernet utilisant des banques de mémoire et une mémoire à accès partagé.Cette carte a permis l'étude d'une passerelle entre le réseau Ethernet et le réseau Mil1553. Cette passerelle permet le contrôle d'automates sur le réseau précédent à partir d'un mini-ordinateur connecté sut' un réseau local départemental.Le développement d'un réseau homogène permettant de relier des systèmes sur 0S9/68000 autorise aussi la réalisation d'applications tournant sur des systèmes différents et dialoguant par l'intermédiaire de simples requêtes d'entrées/sorties transitant par le noyau du système.Le besoin s'est alors fait sentir de faire communiquer 0S9/68000 avec d'autres systèmes hétérogènes par leur système d'exploitation et leur unité centrale. Les protocoles TCP/IP du département de la défense Américaine ont été utilisés. De plus, l'interface de communication inter process du système UNIX BSD4.2 a été installée pour permettre le portage d'applications réparties venant de UNIX.Ces développements ont montré l'intérêt des réseaux niveau des applications industrielles et l'importance croissante accordée aux communications.
