El presente volumen contiene cuarenta artículos científicos escritos por profesores del área de Filología Inglesa pertenecientes a varias universidades que han querido homenajear a la Dra. Asunción Alba Pelayo, catedrática de Filología Inglesa y actual profesora emérita en la UNED. Los ensayos están agrupados en las siguientes secciones: I) Lingüística y didáctica del inglés, II) Literatura en lengua inglesa, III) Traducción, y IV) Historia y cultura de los países de habla inglesa. Previamente, el lector tendrá la oportunidad de conocer mejor a la homenajeada a través del Prólogo de las editoras, la Semblanza que nos presenta Enrique Alcaraz y la Carta a una amiga de Rafael Páez Galvañón. El volumen también contiene una Tabula gratulatoria con los nombres de los profesores que, no habiendo podido contribuir con un trabajo, desearon sumarse a este homenaje.

Linguistics, Literature and Cultural Studies are the three main research areas within Philology. Scientific production, such as conferences and journals, has tended towards specialization, and has been traditionally classified according to separate disciplines and languages. However, this volume offers a holistic view of the wide area of Philology, therefore allowing the permeability of the three areas mentioned above. As such, this book shows that the line that separates Linguistics, Literature and Cultural Studies is actually very thin. This volume is composed of a miscellanea of philological studies dealing with various trends in Modern Language research. It looks at three languages in particular: Spanish, English and French, with a special relevance to the first two.

Revista de Estudios Ingleses es un anuario dirigido y gestionado por miembros del Departamento de Filología Inglesa y Alemana de la Universidad de Almería con el propósito de ofrecer un foro de intercambio de producción científica en campos del conocimiento tan diversos como la lengua inglesa, literatura en lengua inglesa, didáctica del inglés, traducción, inglés para fines específicos y otros igualmente vinculados a los estudios ingleses.

Toni Morrison’s Beloved: Origins explores the multifarious ways in which memory works to conserve a legacy of the ancient past. The vestiges of both Classical Greek and Ancient Egyptian belief systems call to a concern with myths of regeneration.

This collection of papers brings together contributions from experts in functional linguistics and in Construction Grammar approaches, with the aim of exploring the concept of construction from different angles and trying to arrive at a better understanding of what a construction is, and what roles constructions play in the frameworks which can be located within a multidimensional functional-cognitive space. At the same time, the volume has a historical dimension, for instance in plotting the developments which led to recent models. The book is organised in three sections: the first deals with particular theoretical issues, the second is devoted to the recent Lexical Constructional Model, and the third presents a number of analyses of specific constructions. The volume thus makes an important contribution to the ongoing debate about the relationship between functionalist and constructionist models.

This book investigates the interaction between new English lexis and metaphor/metonymy – figures meticulously defined and contrasted in terms of similarity/contiguity. It advances three main hypotheses: (i) derived lexis is more likely to be figurative in meaning and usage than the bases from which it is derived; (ii) derivation obscures the figurative origins of this lexis to varying degrees depending on differing processing strategies; (iii) lexicalisation is determined by Relevance (in Sperber and Wilson’s sense) to the needs of a culture or its powerful interest groups, where culture, following Norman Fairclough, is characterised as an ensemble of recognised action/discourse genres. This volume is distinctive in exploring the relations between grammar and metonymy and providing numerous examples of metaphorical and metonymic lexis as it reflects society's changing needs and (contested) ideologies.
