This book is organized into five parts reflecting major topics in estuarine synthesis: prediction of inputs from drainage basins; coupling of physical and ecological factors; links between biogeochemistry and food webs; controls of estuarine habitats; and the role of synthesis in addressing issues of management. Each part contains an introduction; plenary talks illustrating case histories of successful syntheses; and a workshop report report presenting an overview of the topic, goals for further synthesis, and recommendations about the data, knowledge, and models necessary to attain these goals.

Chemistry, Biology, and the Estuarine System is the first volume of a series launched by Estuarine Research Foundation to present information and concepts regarding the estuaries in the world. The contents of this volume are papers presented in a conference held in South Carolina in October 1973. The book is divided into three major subject areas, namely, Chemistry, Biology, and Estuarine System. The first part focuses on the cycling of elements and estuaries. The second part deals with the dynamics of the food webs in various estuaries. The last section discusses the estuarine system, specifically estuarine modeling. In this part, several estuarine models in different locations are explored. Model analysis as well as utility of systems models is covered in this section. This volume serves as a valuable source of information to interested parties in the field of ecology, biology, chemistry, environmental science, etc.

The ongoing growth of human populations within US coastal regions continues to increase habitat loss, eutrophication, organic loading, overfishing, and other anthropogenic stressors in estuarine waters. The National Estuarine Research Reserve System (NERRS) is a federally funded initiative that addresses these critical estuarine problems and coastal resource issues at 25 sites in 21 states. Now estuarine and watershed scientists, resource managers, community planners, and other professionals dealing with coastal zone issues have an expert resource describing the NERRS program, organization, goals, and management strategy. Estuarine Research, Monitoring, and Restoration first defines the components and technical aspects of the NERRS program, then provides valuable insight into the program through the presentation of six case studies of NERRS sites. This book examines estuarine problems including degraded water quality, reduction of biodiversity, and problematic invasive species, then analyzes the human impacts affecting estuaries. Estuarine Perspectives presents most of the invited papers presented at the Fifth Biennial International Research Conference on Estuarine Research. The book includes information on one tropical and two Arctic estuaries; contemporary techniques as applied to estuarine research; and some hypotheses of estuarine ecology. The text also describes value and management of wetlands as well as the chemical cycles and fluxes. The primary production and photosynthesis; the physical and biological factors of estuarine sediment; and the ecosystem dynamics are also encompassed.
