The 70th volume of the Eranos Yearbooks presents the work of the last three years of activities at the Eranos Foundation (2009–2011). It includes the papers given on the theme of the 2011 conference, About Fragility in the Contemporary World, together with talks given on the occasion of the seminar cycle entitled, Eranos Jung Lectures, which took place during the years 2010–2011 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Carl Gustav Jung’s passing. Eminent international scholars gathered to share their work, presented here primarily in English, along with some chapters in Italian. This publication carries additional special meaning in further consolidating the collaboration with the Fetzer Institute by presenting the manuscripts of the Dialogues on the Power of Love, held at Eranos between 2008 and 2011. From 1933 onwards, the Eranos Conferences took shape in Ascona-Moscia (Switzerland), springing from the idea of Olga Fröbe-Kapteyn to create a ‘Meeting Place of East and West’. Under the influence of the psychologist Carl Gustav Jung and other prominent leaders of that era, the Eranos Conferences found their way towards symbolical, archetypal, and mythological motifs. The Eranos gathering is symbolized by its famous Round Table, the image and meaning of which inspired many of the leading thinkers of the 20th century. For more than 70 years, depth psychologists, philosophers, theologians, orientalists, historians of religions as well as natural scientists find at Eranos a unique place where they could meet and exchange views. The rich collection of Eranos Yearbooks bears testimony to an immense and original work accomplished in various fields of learning.

The 71st volume of the Eranos Yearbooks, Beyond Masters – Spaces Without Thresholds, presents the work of the activities at the Eranos Foundation in 2012. The book gathers the lectures organized on the theme of the 2012 Eranos Conference, “On the Threshold – Disorientation and New Forms of Space” together with the talks given on the occasion of the 2012 Eranos-Jung Lectures seminar cycle, on the topic, “The Eclipse of the Masters?” This volume includes essays by Valerio Adami, Stephen Aizenstat, Claudio Bonvecchio, Michael Engelhard, Adriano Fabris, Maurizio Ferraris, Mauro Guindani, Nikolaus Koliusis, Fabio Merlini, Bernardo Nante, Fausto Petrella, Gian Piero Quaglino, Shantena Augusto Sabbadini, Amelia Valtolina, and Marco Vozza. C.G. Jung held an ‘extemporaneous’ seminar on “The Solar Myths and Opicinus de Canistris” at the 1943 Eranos Conference. In a complete version for the first time, this book presents all of the known material relating to the seminar, including notes taken by two of his students, Alwine von Keller and Rivkah Schärf Kluger, and the outline that Jung himself prepared. Opicinus de Canistris (1296–c. 1352) was a priest and cartographer from near Pavia, Italy. His typically medieval cartography is characterized by historical, theological, symbolic and astrological references along with a curious anthropomorphism, which depicted continents and oceans with human features. Jung recognized this as a projection of Opicinus’ inner world and interpreted the maps of the world as mandalas, where the integration of the shadow, the dark principle, was missing. A comprehensive historical, geographic, and thematic analysis of the multidimensional and dynamic migration experience of Ethiopians within and beyond Africa. Ethiopia is one of the largest African sources of transnational migrants, with an estimated two to three million Ethiopians living outside of the home country. This edited collection provides a critical examination of the temporal, spatial, and thematic dimensions of Ethiopian migration, mapping out its scale, scope, and destinations. The thirteen essays here (plus an introduction and conclusion by the volume's editors) offer a discussion of the state of knowledge and current debates on the diaspora and suggest alternative frameworks for interrogating and understanding the Ethiopian migration and diasporic experiences. Key time periods and literatures are identified to study Ethiopian transnational migration, moving from a survey of patterns in pre-twentieth century Ethiopia and on to changing trajectories in the imperial period and under succeeding postrevolutionary regimes. Geographically, the contour of the Ethiopian diaspora is outlined, identifying key destinations and patterns of return. In particular, the volume seeks to correct the traditional tendency to conflate the Ethiopian diaspora with North America and Europe by including areas that have long been marginalized, such as inter-Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. The objective is not to construct a simple cartography of migration but a critical analysis of national and global issues, policies, trends, and processes that shape the roots and routes of the migration dynamic. Calendars of Mesoamerican civilisations are subjected to what is categorised as “ritual practices of time”. This book is a comparative explication of rituals of time of four calendars: the Long Count calendar, the 260-day calendar, the 365-day calendar and the 52-years calendar. Building upon a comparative analytical model, the book contributes new theoretical insights about ritual practices and temporal philosophies. This comprehensive investigation analyses how ritual practices are represented and conceptualised in intellectual systems and societies. The temporal ritual practices are systematically analysed in relation to calendar organisation and structure, arithmetic, cosmogony and chronometry, spatial-temporality (cosmology), natural world, eschatology, sociology, politics, and ontology. It is argued that the 260-day calendar has a particular symbolic importance in Mesoamerican temporal philosophies and practices.
