This book demonstrates how educators and youth leaders can help middle-school and older students understand and define their relationship with nature and learn the importance of protecting the environment. Chapter 1 defines environmental ethics and discusses biocentric and anthropocentric ways of seeing the world. Chapter 2 examines how ecology, nature, technology, and human communities relate to environmental ethics. Chapter 3 classifies types of environmental ethics, discusses misconceptions and excuses that act as barriers to following an environmental ethic, and provides details on specific ethics: Wise Use movement, social ecology, ecofeminism, land stewardship or management, Leopold's ecological conscience or land as community, Schweitzer's reverence for life, deep ecology or bioregionalism, indigenous or traditional ethics, animal liberation and rights, and radical ecoactivism. Chapter 4 discusses strategies for teaching environmental ethics and values, criticisms of such education in public schools, instructional challenges, and authentic assessment of student progress. Chapter 5 describes 40 outdoor and classroom activities to help students develop an environmental ethic. The activities fall into 11 categories: thinking and discussion, solo reflection, writing, nature study, questioning, codes of ethics, role models, action projects, aesthetics, literature, and games. Doing Environmental Ethics faces our ecological crisis by drawing on environmental science, economic theory, international law, and religious teachings, as well as philosophical arguments. It engages students in constructing ethical presumptions based on arguments for duty, character, relationships, and rights, and then tests these moral presumptions by predicting the likely consequences of acting on them. Students apply what they learn to policy issues discussed in the final part of the book: sustainable consumption, environmental policy, clean air and water, agriculture, managing public lands, urban ecology, and climate change. Questions after each chapter and a worksheet aid readers in deciding how to live more responsibly. The second edition has been updated to reflect the latest developments in environmental ethics, including sustainable practices of corporations, environmental NGO actions, and rainforest certification programs. This edition also gives greater emphasis to environmental justice, Rawls, and ecofeminism. Revised study questions concern application and analysis, and new 'Decisions' inserts invite students to analyze evaluate current environmental issues.

To comprehensively address the complexities of current socio-ecological problems involved in global environmental change, it is indispiseble to achieve an integration of ecological understanding and ethical values. Contemporary science proposes an inclusive ecosystem concept that recognizes humans as components. Contemporary environmental ethics includes eco-social justice and the realization that as important as biodiversity is cultural diversity, inter-cultural, inter-institutional, and international collaboration requiring a novel approach known as biocultural conservation. Right action in confronting the challenges of the 21st century requires science and ethics to be seamlessly integrated. This book resulted from the 14th Cary Conference that brought together leading scholars and practitioners in ecology and environmental philosophy to discuss core terminologies, methods, questions, and practical frameworks for long-term socio-ecological research, education, and decision making.
