Environmental Education Collection: A Review of Resources for Educators: Volume 3

This collection traces the development and findings of curriculum studies of environmental education since the mid-1970s. Based on a virtual special issue of the Journal of Curriculum Studies, the volume identifies a series of curriculum challenges for and from environmental education. These include key questions in curriculum politics, planning and implementation, including which educative experiences should a curriculum foster and why; what the scope of a worthwhile curriculum should be and how it should be decided, organised and reworked; why distinctive curricula are provided to different groups of students; and how curriculum should best be enacted and evaluated? The editor and contributors call for renewed attention to the possibilities for future directions in research, in light of previously published work and innovations in scholarship. They also offer critical commentary on curriculum, critique and crisis in environmental education, through new material and previous studies from the journal, by addressing three key themes: perspectives on curriculum and environment education; accounting for curriculum in environmental education; and changes in curriculum for environmental education.

This resource guide is designed to help educators find curricula, multimedia resources, and other educational materials that can enhance the teaching of environmental education in a variety of settings. Curriculum guides and other educational materials listed in this guide were evaluated by classroom teachers, content experts, and environmental educators. Each set of materials was reviewed by at least three people. Curriculum materials included in this compendium were evaluated using the Environmental Education Materials Guidelines for Excellence developed by the North American Association for Environmental Education (NAAEE). The write-ups were designed to point out the variety of factors an educator may wish to consider when deciding which materials are most appropriate for a particular group of students and how those materials might be used most effectively. The first section of this guide highlights approximately 50 environmental education curriculum materials. Each entry contains a summary of the curriculum information about grade levels, subject areas, author, publisher, and price; comments specific to the six key characteristics of quality environmental education materials according to the Guidelines for Excellence; and a sample of quotations from the reviewers' evaluation sheets. Due to the increasing trend of international interest in education for climate change and the environment, there has been an increase of research in the area.
