Dynamics of entrepreneurship have attracted growing attention from scholars of political science, policy studies, public administration and planning, as well as more recently, from the realms of international relations and foreign policy analysis. Under the banner of political entrepreneurship, this volume considers and maps out conceptual approaches to the study of entrepreneurship drawn from these fields, discusses synergies, envisages new analytical tools and offers contemporary empirical case studies, illustrating the diverse political contexts in which entrepreneurship takes place in the polis. Drawing upon an international cast of senior academics and cutting edge young researchers, the volume takes a closer look at key aspects of political entrepreneurship, such as, defining political entrepreneurs, how it relates to change, decision-making and strategies, organizational arrangements, institutional rules, varying contexts and future research agendas. The economic crisis has had severe and negative impacts on the EU over the last decade. This book focuses on a neglected dimension by examining European political entrepreneurship in times of economic crisis with particular emphasis on EU member-states, institutions and policies. The main focus is on the role that the political entrepreneur can play in promoting entrepreneurship and growth. It is argued that the political entrepreneur and political entrepreneurship can positively influence the conditions for entrepreneurial activity and business.

Unleashing entrepreneurship is a global imperative, evidenced by worldwide governmental passion for classifying and measuring entrepreneurship, and by a mounting consensus that excessive entry regulation and other impediments dampen entrepreneurial innovation. This chapter provides an overview and assessment of what available contemporary theory and evidence have to say about the linkages between government regulation in the marketplace and entrepreneurial activity--and reviews what we do not know and perhaps cannot measure. Countries can learn from both the good institutions that have allowed other nations to prosper, as well as mistakes those nations have made. Policymakers' task--and that of entrepreneurs themselves--is to affirmatively reduce existing and avoid new administrative and regulatory constraints beyond the foundations for maintenance of rule of law and sustaining property rights. This chapter details policy prescriptions elevating economic freedom that would promote entrepreneurship, as well as cautions against excessive zeal in “promoting” entrepreneurship via political means. Classically liberal Constitutions may not rescue global entrepreneurship in the short run, but incremental steps today can lay groundwork helping to unleash Liberty's Unfinished Business. Importantly, along with governments, the entrepreneurial/business sector itself has an urgent, still-unappreciated role to play.

This book attempts to advance critical knowledge and practices for fostering a variety of entrepreneurship at a city level. The book aims to connect scholarship and policy practice in two disciplines: Urban Studies and Entrepreneurship. The book has included contributions from developed, emerging, and developing countries. The chapters are clubbed under five main sections; I. Startups and Entrepreneurial Opportunities, II. Knowledge Spillover, III. Social and Bureaucratic Entrepreneurialism, IV. Demography and Informal Entrepreneurs V. Perspectives from Emerging and Developing Economies. In this regard, the book explores a number of questions, such as: what are the important varieties of entrepreneurship, how can they be observed and measured, and how does each variety emerge and operate under various conditions of infrastructure and opportunity? Which type(s) of entrepreneurship should a city prefer? What can cities do to stimulate desirable forms of entrepreneurship or is it more of a spontaneous phenomenon? Why do policies that enhance entrepreneurship in some contexts seem instead to promote crony capitalism and rent-seeking in other contexts? Should cities focus on growing their own entrepreneurs and entrepreneurial enterprises or on luring them from other cities and countries? How can a collective action in a city promote (or hinder) entrepreneurship? The contributions in the present volume address head-on these questions at the intersection of urban studies, economic theory, and the practicalities of economic development and urban governance, in a genuinely global range of places and applications.
