"Both commercial and military industries incorporate the use of Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR). In the case of the military, a stationary object, such as a bunker or tunnel, can be detected. Even high-resolution, three-dimensional (3D) and twodimensional (2D) imagery of energy reflected by the target and its surrounding environment can be produced. This is accomplished using multiple scene perspectives inherent in advanced Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) techniques. Although underground target detection can be successful, the return data, usually suffers a significant degree of signal degradation due to the ground medium and target composition. A valid theoretical target model must account for adverse affects such as specular and diffuse reflections, dispersion and attenuation in order to provide an accurate representation of the simulated GPR scenario. It is the aim of this thesis to demonstrate the benefits of a high fidelity GPR target model. Demonstrated in the model is the ability to record estimative return power as a function of multiple variables including frequency, target depth, target composition, ground medium, complex antenna patterns, and transmitted power. Using ray-tracing, a bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF), and 3D geometric analysis, the specular and diffuse reflective and refractive sub-surface energy interactions known to take place for a spatially complex target are simulated. Results culminate in the comparison of 3D and 2D imagery generated using this target model with imagery generated using previous models"--Abstract.

This paper presents research concerning the use of visual-inertial Simultaneous Localization And Mapping (SLAM) algorithms to aid in Continuous Wave (CW) radar target mapping. SLAM is an established field in which radarhas been used to internally contribute to the localization algorithms. Instead, the application in this case is to use SLAM outputs to localize radar data and construct three-dimensional target maps which can be viewed in augmented reality. These methods are transferable to other types of radar units and sensors, but this paper presents the research showing how the methods can be applied to calculate depth efficiently with CW radar through triangulation using an intersection algorithm enhanced by calculating intersection angles. Localization of the radar target is achieved through quaternion algebra. Due to the compact nature of the SLAM and CW devices, the radar unit can be operated entirely handheld. Targets are scanned in a free-form manner where there is no need to have a gridded scanning layout. One main advantage to this method is eliminating many hours of usage training and expertise, thereby eliminating ambiguity in the location, size and depth of buried or hidden targets. Additionally, this method grants the user the additional power, penetration and sensitivity of CW radar without the lack of range finding. Applications include pipe and buried structure location, avalanche rescue, landmine detection, structural health monitoring and historical site research. Improvements to the method such as Snell's law of refraction are also discussed. The result is an algorithm that produces accurate 3-D models of buried or obscured objects using a single frequency CW radar.

Ground-penetrating radar (GPR) is a rapidly developing field that has seen tremendous progress over the past 15 years. The development of GPR spans aspects of geophysical science, technology, and a wide range of scientific and engineering applications. It is the breadth of applications that has made GPR such a valuable tool in the geophysical consulting and geotechnical engineering industries, has lead to its rapid development, and inspired new areas of research in academia. The topic of GPR has gone from not even being mentioned in geophysical texts ten years ago to being the focus of hundreds of research papers and special issues of journals dedicated to the topic. The explosion of primary literature devoted to GPR technology, theory and applications, has lead to a strong demand for an up-to-date synthesis and overview of this rapidly developing field. Because there are specifics in the utilization of GPR for different applications, a review of the current state of development of the applications along with the fundamental theory is required. This book will provide sufficient detail to allow both practitioners and newcomers to the area of GPR to use it as a handbook and primary research reference.*Review of GPR theory and applications by leaders in the field*Up-to-date information and references*Effective handbook and primary research reference for both experienced practitioners and newcomers

The concept developed under this applied research and development contract is a novel Ground Penetrating Radar system capable of remotely detecting, analyzing, and mapping buried waste containers from a mobile platform. From the testing and analysis performed to date, the 3-D SISAR has achieved the detection, accurate location, and three-dimensional imaging of buried test objects from a stand-off geometry. Tests have demonstrated that underground objects have been located to within 0.1 meter of their actual position. This work validates that the key elements of the approach are performing as anticipated. The stand-off synthetic aperture radar (SAR) methodology has been demonstrated to be a feasible approach as a remote sensing technique. The radar sensor constructed under this project is providing adequate quality data for imaging, and the matched filters have been demonstrated to provide enhanced target detection. Additional work is on-going in the area of underground propagation and scattering phenomena to provide enhanced depth performance, as the current imaging results have been limited to a few feet of depth underground.
