Against a backdrop of a complex linguistic landscape, this study navigates the intricacies of language, culture, and education, aiming to contribute to the ongoing discourse surrounding the role of English in a globally connected world. A mixed-methods approach, comprising a questionnaire for students and interviews with teachers from Le Lycée Mohammed VI d'Excellence in Morocco, is utilized for a comprehensive exploration of the research question. While the majority of students reported no direct impact of English language teaching on their cultural identity, a subtle, layered influence was observed through their adoption of Western cultural norms. On the other hand, teachers displayed an acute awareness of the significant influence of globalization on teaching English, emphasizing the intricate link between language and culture. They highlighted the role of English as a conduit for intercultural communication and as a critical tool for fostering cultural understanding. The findings signal both challenges and opportunities, reinforcing the essential role of teachers in facilitating language learning and intercultural competence in an interconnected educational landscape. This monograph underscores the need for further research to delve into the subtleties of students' perceptions and to navigate the complexities inherent in teaching English in a globalized environment, ultimately aiming to offer empirical and theoretical contributions that inform policy and practice in the field of English language teaching.

In addition to identifying critical issues in the discipline of English studies and the main challenges facing English departments from historical, institutional, and pedagogical perspectives, it suggests strategies for addressing and overcoming them.

Thesis (M.A.) from the year 2018 in the subject English - Pedagogy, Didactics, Literature Studies, , language: English, abstract: This study aims to investigate the incorporation of a World Englishes (WEs) paradigm to English language teaching (ELT) in Moroccan higher education. The main objective of the study is to shed light on the usefulness of adopting such a paradigm in a Moroccan context. This study is a replication of work conducted in other places worldwide. In conducting this study, I consulted a literature review of work related to the fields of WEs, English as an international language (EIL) and English as a lingua franca (ELF). I also consulted a literature review of work related to ELT, applied linguistics and sociolinguistics. The literature review is meant to be a baseline to what is tackled throughout the whole Master thesis.

Though diverse, the Arab world boasts a unique culture and native language, both of which are unlike those found in English-speaking countries. Perhaps due to the nature of these differences, Arab-Western relations have been described as existing on one of the world’s great cultural fault-lines. Debate about the potential effects, both positive and negative, of English-medium education and the learning of English in the region’s schools and universities is one expression of this. Even as debate continues, issues of politics, culture, social mobility, and identity are played out in the English language classrooms of the Arab world on a daily basis. The current volume explores some of the concerns related to the place of English and English-medium education in the Arab world. It examines issues of the relationship between English, Arabic, cultural identity and power in the region within a historical and contemporary framework; the experiences of learners from Arabic-medium secondary schools adjusting to English-medium colleges; and the challenges and potential rewards of promoting student-centered classrooms and technology in traditionally teacher-centered environments. These issues are explored from the perspectives of teachers, students, researchers and other stakeholders in Oman, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Sudan.

This case study describes the educational, social, and cultural experiences of three Arab Muslim high school students in the ESL program of a southeastern state of U.S. During the fall of 2009, the researcher spent an average of two days a week with the participants and their families and friends as a participant-observer. Data included field notes, taped interviews of the three student participants, and observation of the participants and their interaction with their families, friends and community members. The question that guided the research was "How do the competing discourses of family, religion, and language impact the identities of Arab Muslim adolescent English language learners?" The study draws on sociocultural theory and postcolonial theory in order to examine the ways in which the ESOL students negotiate and their identities as they learn English. Findings indicate that students' identities are fluid and constructed in response to different social contexts. The study illustrates the ways in which English Only policy, the ESL program in the school, and the stigmatized status particularly after 9/11 have been powerful forces that marginalized the Arab Muslim immigrant students. The study shows the ways in which these Arab Muslim students have constructed hybridized identities to maintain their L1 cultural identities while at the same time learning English to become a part of the their host country.
