Excerpt from English History in American School Text-Books One of my earliest recollections is that of being taken to see the fireworks which were set off at the pierhead in Ramsgate harbor to celebrate the declaration of peace after the Crimean War. From that time until I went, when quite a young man, into the Gallery of Battles in Versailles - a gallery in which the glories of the French armies are celebrated in acres of canvas by the famous French artist Detaille - I never fully realized that Englishmen had ever been defeated by land or sea. I had been brought up in the belief that one Englishman could beat three Johnny Crapauds. But here all my illusions on that score were shattered at one rude blow, for about one picture in. Every three represented a defeat of the English in either a naval or a military engagement. Then I made up my mind with Sir Robert Walpole, that I would study anything but history, for history must be false. Some such awakening has no doubt come to almost every thinking man or woman who has been brought up on the old methods of teaching the history of their country, whether they be English or American, French or German, Turk or Russian - this no doubt has its effect in inspiring a patriotic feeling; in keeping alive a belief in the invincibleness of one's own nation; a faith in its good star, which has led men on to further victories and inspired them to yet more valorous deeds than their forefathers have performed. Excerpt from A History of the United States This textbook is based on the plan of study recommended for the seventh and eighth grades by the Committee Of Eight Of the American Historical Association. The work for the sixth grade has been given in a shorter book, entitled Introductory American History. About two-thirds Of that book concern the beginnings in Great Britain and Europe of the civilization which the people of the United States share with other peoples Of European race. The remainder contains descriptions Of the discoveries and early settlements of America, principally in the sixteenth century. This volume for the upper grades Opens with a chapter which repeats briefly the story of early discovery and settlement. The chapter may be used as a review in those schools which use the Introductory American History. Teachers who do not use that book will find in the chapter the essential facts of the period. American history is so rich and varied that the most serious ques tion which confronts the authors Of a textbook is that of selection and emphasis. If space is to be found for adequate treat ment Of the most characteristic features of our national develop ment, especially Of those within the comprehension Of the pupil Of the seventh or eighth grade, certain phases Of the political and military history Of the country must be reserved for later study. Excerpt from A History of the United States for Schools The aim of the authors in writing this book has been to present what seemed to them the main historical developments in American history, the knowledge of which will enable the pupil to understand 'he social, political, and economic institutions which he finds about him in this land wherein he lives. In doing this we have tried to use simple language, to show clearly the relation of one fact to another, and to keep the story constantly moving forward. We have sought to interest not by the selection of the merely entertaining facts which are often the things of least value, but by choice of the facts that have meant something in our growth as a nation. This is first of all a text-book and not a story-book. We make no apology for the omission of many of the yarns of American his tory. If history is worth teaching at all, it is worth teaching as causal, vital, meaning history. We heartily approve of reading his tory for mere pleasure. History is, we believe, in many of its high est literary forms, most delightful and valuable mere reading, but for serious study there are certain essentials which should not be disguised or palliated by facts which are only entertaining, and not essentially significant. Excerpt from New School History of the United States of America Eleven years and more have elapsed since the first publication of this text-book. This period has witnessed a series of grave transactions, and a surprising increase of the population, produci tions, and wealth of the country. It seemed indispensable to extend the narrative to the completion of the century since the surrender of the British at Yorktown assured American Independence. To do this, it was necessary to contract the story throughout, so that the volume might be kept within suitable limits. Matters of secondary importance have been omitted, and greater brevity of statement has been introduced where practicable, particularly in the earlier periods and the War of Secession. There is no longer necessity or propriety in treating the late mournful struggle with the same fulness as before. Moreover, the wondrous perspective of time has already diminished the prominence of many events. And has suffered minor details to melt into the haze of the receding landscape. Excerpt from The American Revolution in Our School d104-Books: An Attempt to Trace the Influence of Early School Education on the Feeling Towards England in the United States Some of these text-books may not have been responsible for the earliest impressions of the pupils on this subject; others which did have such an influence certainly exist, but did not come to my notice. The plan, however, on which this study has been developed, was to accept the replies to inquiries sent out, as a fair reflection of general conditions, and to avoid broadening the investigation. The picture which is thereby revealed of the teaching of American History throughout the country, cannot but be very incomplete, as there are innumerable communities and num'berless text-books, and those which I have examined form but a fraction of the whole. Besides, it is impossible to ascertain how many pupils studied from one particular book, and how many made use of another.
