Excerpt from England and the English, Vol. 1 of 2 IT is only to express my thanks to certain kind correspondents for the assistance they have afforded me, that I shall delay the Reader from the work now before him. To one gentleman ofthe highest scientific attainments and reputation I am indebted for many suggestions, of which I have availed myself in my brief view of the State of Science - to another gentleman, qualified, perhaps before all men living, to judge profoundly of the philosophy of Bentham, I am also indebted for considerable aid in the sketch of that remarkable writer's moral and legislative codes which will be found in the Appendix to the second volume; and to the taste and critical know ledge of a third gentleman I owe many obligations in the chapter devoted to the survey of the State of the Arts amongst us at this time. To the last gentleman my acknowledgments are perhaps the greater, because he has suffered me, in his general approbation of my theories, to apply a part of his. Excerpt from Continuation of the History of England, Vol. 2 He had, in his answer to their former address, assured them of his constant regard to the rights and prosperity of the nation: he had explained the exhausted state of the Dutch; cx-patiated upon the zeal of that republic for the interests of Britain, as well as the maintenance of the protestant religion; and expressed his hope that the English parliament would not only repay the sums they had expended in his expedition, but likewise fur ther support them to the utmost of their ability against the common enemies of their liberties and religion. He had observed that a considerable army and fleet would be necessary for the reduction of Ireland and the pro tection of Britain, and he desired they would settle the revenue in such a manner that it might be collected without difficulty and dispute. The sum total of the money expended by the states - general in William's expedition amounted to seven millions of guilders, and the commons granted six hundred thousand pounds for the discharge of this debt, incurred for the preservation of their rights and religion. They voted funds for rais ing and maintaining an army of two-and-twenty thou sand men, as well as for equipping a numerous fleet but they provided for no more than half a year's sub sistence of the tr00ps, heping the reduction of Ireland might be finished in that term; and this instance of frugality the king considered as a mark of their difii dence of his administration. The whigs were resolved to supply him gradually, that he might be the more dependent upon their zeal and attachment; but he was not at all pleased with their precaution. Excerpt from A Child's History of England, Vol. 2 But the Englishman did it for all that, and did it - not SO madly but so wisely, that he decoyed the great army into the narrow ill-paved lanes and bye-ways of Lincoln, where its horse-soldiers could not ride in any strong body; and there he made such havoc with them, that the whole force surrendered themselves prisoners, except the Count who said that he would never yield to any English traitor alive, and accordingly got killed. The end of this victory, which the English called, for a joke, the Fair of Lincoln, was the usual one in those times - the common men were slain without any mercy.
