Engaging the African Diaspora in K-12 Education provides in-service and pre-service teachers with valuable information and resources related to African diaspora communities in the United States, Europe, and Latin America. This unique anthology fills an important gap in current pedagogical and curricular publications by combining the writings of leading scholars of the African diaspora with practical, hands-on tips and resources from middle and high school teachers and administrators. Drawing on cutting-edge academic scholarship, chapters of the book address topics such as the transatlantic slave trade, slavery in Latin America, the Haitian Revolution, the U.S. Civil Rights Movement, Pan-Africanism, Black German Studies, and literature and art by Black women in the diaspora. In addition, Engaging the African Diaspora in K-12 Education includes chapters on anti-racist education, use of the performing arts to teach African American history, and critical reflections by several middle and high school teachers on practices they have adopted to increase their students' exposure to the African diaspora in the classroom.

This book demonstrates the application of African Diaspora Literacy in K–12 schools and teacher education programs. The book emerged from a four-week Fulbright-Hays Group Abroad project to Cameroon, West Africa, which was focused on African Diaspora Literacy. The project was guided by the African principle of “Ubuntu” (I am because we are). The 15-member team was comprised of eight faculty members (representing five universities—Benedict College, Michigan State University, South Carolina State University, South University, and the University of South Carolina), one community member, two K–12 administrators, and four K–12 teachers from high need schools. The inclusion of such a diverse group of participants in the Kamtok project (e.g., professors, K–12 teachers, community members) lent itself to producing rich data that captured both the intellectual scholarship and layperson’s experience with equilateral consideration. The purpose of the project was to gain firsthand knowledge, artifacts, documents, experiences, and resources to be used in the development, implementation, and dissemination of curricula to be used in K–12 schools and university classrooms to more effectively prepare educators to teach African American students. Focusing specifically on the language, history, politics, economics, religion, and cultural traditions of people in the African Diaspora (e.g, U.S., Africa, Caribbean, the Americas, Europe, Asia), this book illuminates critical information typically missing from K–12 schools and teacher education, and English curricula. Chapters are written by scholars from Cameroons as well as those from the U.S. The book represents a lovely compilation of application, theory, and research. The book explores how African Diaspora Literacy can be used to heal the endemic physical, symbolic, linguistic, curricula, pedagogical, and system violence that African American children and youth experience in schools and in society.

Re-engaging the African Diasporas: Pan-Africanism in the Age of Globalization is the second volume in the Kwame Nkrumah International Conference series, and brings together twenty selected papers presented at the Third Kwame Nkrumah International Conference held at Kwantlen Polytechnic University on August 19-21, 2014. Two premises inform this volume: (1) If the history of slavery and its vestiges divided and continue to divide the continent and its Diasporas, modern technology should be harnessed to bridge that divide, and (2) the continent’s development is a boon to the development of what the African Union has dubbed Africa’s “Sixth Region”. The book threads together papers that seek to give academic and intellectual impetus to tie the continent’s development to that of the African Diaspora. The goal is to end the inertia and inward-looking on the part of scholars and academics in both Africa and “African International” or “Global Africa,” and re-engage one another in more productive ways. By harnessing the enormous resources available in our internet age and riding the cresting wave of globalization, the task of re-engagement will be vastly enhanced, and the debates and discussions in this volume will serve to facilitate this re-engagement. A main highlight of the conference was a special tribute to Nelson Mandela to honour his death in December, 2013 and celebrate 20 years of South African independence. In these papers, scholars examine Mandela’s role in the transition of South Africa from a racist state to a democratic nation. They critically examine how the ANC’s policies have impacted post-Apartheid South Africa and question what alternatives remain for the future.

"Black African immigrant youth and young adults from countries south of the Sahara, among the most rapidly growing immigrant groups in the US given immigration, resettlement, and asylum programs, have long demonstrated varied racial, ethnic, gendered, cultural, linguistic, religious, and transnational identities in their diverse schooling and education practices. Moreover, African immigrant youth enacting complex, embodied practices within and across varied schooling and educational contexts, and at the interplay of language, literacy, and civic learning and action taking, complicate urgent questions of which students may engage civically in schools and communities, and how they may do so. Thus, transformative education research to support diverse schooling, education, and civic engagement experiences for African immigrant and refugee students will increasingly depend on enacting generative research frameworks, teaching approaches, and innovative methodologies. Such research and teaching hold possibilities for assisting and preparing researchers, teacher educators, teachers, and community-based educators to identify key schooling, education and civic engagement practices associated with student's varied identities, and / or taking up research approaches and learning contexts that affirm and extend the identified practices"--

Focused on preparing educators to teach African American students, this straightforward and teacher-friendly text features a careful balance of published scholarship, a framework for culturally relevant and critical pedagogy, research-based case studies of model teachers, and tested culturally relevant practical strategies and actionable steps teachers can adopt. Its premise is that teachers who understand Black culture as an asset rather than a liability and utilize teaching techniques that have been shown to work can and do have specific positive impacts on the educational experiences of African American children.

Crucially, this volume explores the social, political, psychic, and material dimensions of education for Black people within the African diaspora as already part of a larger global phenomenon—linking the national and the international, the local and the global for a more comprehensive understanding of the past, present and future of education for people of African descent around the world.
