The culture of a family's environment has been known to greatly impact a child's learning development. Unfortunately, too many parents are not involved outside of the classroom in their child's education as it relates to reading. As parents undertake the task of becoming involved in their child's education, they are faced with the fact that they are instrumental in laying the foundation for formal reading instruction. A child's very first teacher or role model are the parents. This book, therefore, looks at the resources in the home as well as how often students see their parents or another adult in the home read as a way of increasing student reading achievement. Primarily, the book provides information to parents and/or caregivers about factors that contribute to student achievement as a result of their inovlvement as well as informing other similar parents of urban school students throughout the country.
