The purpose of this research has been to explore the relationship between energy resource development and economic development in India. The thesis which evolved from the research is that energy resource development has lagged behind and constrained economic development in India. Inadequate attention has been paid to developing the power sector, and the petroleum sector is just beginning to be developed. This research consists of an analysis of energy supply covering each of the major energy resources. Using information from India's five year plans, the history of energy re source development was compiled by energy sector. A comprehensive eva luation ofIndia's current position with respect to energy resources was under taken to provide a perspective on future development possibilities. Alternative policy options were presented in the analysis of each energy re source. These options were considered in providing a set of overall policy suggestions for development of energy supplies in India. Dedication This volume is dedicated to my wonderful wife, Jean, who patiently endured the weeks, months and years it took to complete. No words can express my feelings for her and the sacrifices she has made, but this token gesture is the least I can do. Acknowledgements This research was done under the supervision of Professor John Adams.

Energy is fundamental to the economic development of a society. Ensuring energy security is critical to the security, sovereignty, and well-being of any country. However, there is no consensus on the definition of energy security. Energy Security and Economic Development in India: a holistic approach attempts to construct an appropriate definition for the concept of energy security. The evolution of energy security is traced at both the global level and in the Indian context. This book elaborates on the concept of energy security, highlights its linkages, enumerates India's indigenous energy resources, examines the status of energy security in the country, and makes policy suggestions to ensure energy security in the country.

Global energy needs are rising inexorably despite soaring prices while petroleum production is struggling to keep pace, as many existing oilfields go into decline and new reserves become rarer and increasingly difficult to exploit. In this tightening supply situation, the world is witnessing a triangular race between United States, China and India to secure their future energy supplies. The United States, already the world’s largest energy consumer and oil importer may be overtaken by China in the coming decades as the latter aggressively seeks new supplies to fuel its phenomenal growth. India, with its burgeoning population is also poised for dramatic economic development and remains heavily dependent on energy imports to bridge the widening gap between modest domestic production and surging demand. Even as the global economic gravity shifts towards Asia, much of the continent’s oil imports will continue to be sourced from the Arabian Gulf, binding major Asian powers ever closer to the region. What are the international implications of this triangular race for energy supplies? Will it lead to strategic cooperation, competition or even conflict between the three countries? How will oil geopolitics and energy security considerations shape the foreign policies of China and India and the United States? How can the Gulf countries meet and capitalize on the energy needs of these three global players? What strategic partnerships will emerge as the Gulf countries perform a delicate balancing act in this critical supply scenario? These and related issues were discussed by energy experts who assembled at the ECSSR Twelfth Annual Energy Conference on China, India and the United States: Competition for Energy Resources held from November 19–21, 2006 in Abu Dhabi. This volume of compiled conference presentations offers global, regional and country-wise perspectives on the international race for energy resources and its wider economic and political ramifications.

The book sheds understanding on the relations between development and global energy security by looking at China and India. It addresses the following issues: what is the new definition of energy security? How does it affect global politics and international relations? What are the energy security concerns of China and India, and what policies and approaches have they taken to deal with energy security issues? Since China and India are searching for oil and gas in the Middle East, Africa, and Southeast Asia, would their acquisition efforts conflict with the interests of other energy giants such as the U.S., Japan, and would their growing overseas activities challenge U.S. policy in those energy-rich regions? The book provides insight into what the new global energy order may be and how the growth models and energy structures may shape the economic growth and energy. It analyzes both the state-centered approach and market-oriented approach in the global quest for energy resources. It also examines how China and India can adopt a cooperative approach for beneficial relations. The book will be of interest to anyone who is keen to learn how the World especially U.S.A. can accomodate and adapt to the new global energy dynamics and on China and India as new players in global energy markets.

This collection of contributions from a diverse group of prominent international scientists and policy makers brings together their in-depth analyses and innovative ideas about how to resolve the ‘energy for development’ predicament. It includes studies quantifying the role of energy in socioeconomic development, analysis of the interplay between supranational and national institutions in policy implementation, the energy implications of demographic trends such as urbanisation, and exploration of supply-side issues such as the potential role of nuclear energy and ‘cleaning’ fossil fuel energy generation through carbon capture.
