This book investigates how established transport planning tools can evolve to understand and plan for the ever-changing contemporary mobilities that influence the opportunities available to individuals. It discusses existing techniques, revised in the light of the growing interest in the social implications of transport planning decisions: these include analytical tools to interpret consolidated and emerging phenomena, as well as operational tools to tackle new and existing mobility demands and needs. The book then addresses the implications of everyday mobility for individuals and communities. The result of a continuous exchange between the two authors, it brings together the results of their various research projects. Despite referring to different objects and settings, the work presented is connected by an underlying interest in the impact that mobility has on people in an increasingly mobile world, and the need to include such concerns into mobility planning and policy.

This interdisciplinary collection explores what mobility meant, and still means, in the specific contexts of Soviet and East European socialist and post-socialist societies. Events from a mobilities perspective attend to moments in which individual networks coalesce in place but are not isolated in their performance as they often foster far-reaching and mobile networks of community. In so doing, individuals travel from varying distances to participate in localized performances. However, events themselves are also mobile, and events affect mobility. Mobile events serve as contexts that provide meanings and purpose articulated in relation to, and as, a series of other social actions. They further highlight the role of the body and embodied practices in the performance of events. This open access book examines places on the margins and the dynamics through which a marginal position of a place is created. Specifically, it explores how places, mostly in sparsely populated areas, often perceived as immobile and frozen in time, come into being and develop through interference of everyday mobilities and creative practices that cut across the spheres of culture and nature as usually defined. Through fieldwork and case studies from areas in Iceland, Finland, Greenland, and Scotland, the book’s twelve chapters draw out the multiple relations through which places emerge, where people compose their lives as best they can with their surroundings. A special concern is to explore the links between travelling, landscape, and material culture and how places and margins are enacted through mobilities and creative practices of humans and other beings. The emphasis on mobility disturbs the perception of a place as a bounded entity and offers a useful and necessary understanding of places as mobile and fluid. Mobilities on the Margins is a novel and timely contribution to the exploration of human and more-than-human interactions in a world of increasingly fluid mobilities and insistent crises.

Drawing from work on mobilities and geographies of the lifecourse, this collection is concerned with the ways in which age, as a relational concept, is constructed and played out in mobile urban space. With studies of ageing and mobility often focusing on discrete age groups, most notably children and older people, this study seeks to fill a gap in existing literature by exploring mobility in relation to the lifecourse and generation, looking not only at the margins. Whilst some generations are increasingly mobile, others are less so and this disparity in mobility opportunity is relational as age is relational. This book addresses gaps in knowledge in relational geographies of ageing, whilst contributing to literature on mobility and transport, in particular the burgeoning field of mobility (in)justice. Here mobility is considered in its broadest sense, for example in relation to the movement or lack of movement of bodies and to computer-mediated intergenerational communications. Through focusing on urban mobile spaces, from very local spaces of medical care to global spaces of migration that are the context for intergenerational mobilities, this collection explores these interdependencies and considers ways in which intergenerational mobilities are conceptualised and researched.
