Excerpt from Elements of Radiotelegraphy Although this text was written primarily for the guidance and instruction of radio students in the Communication Service of the Navy, it is believed that it will be found helpful in radio instruction in the other military branches of the Government, in civilian radio schools, and for the self instruction of those interested in the subject. Every attempt has been made to present the subject from the physical rather than the mathematical standpoint without sacrifice of technical accuracy, in order that the subject matter may be readily grasped by the layman. In the study of the text, a knowledge of elementary physics and simple mathematics is desirable but not necessary. It is believed that the logical instruction of the student should follow the development of the art by its inventors and scientific workers, consequently considerable prominence is given to the patent phase of the subject. The text, in the main, is a resume of a series of lectures given to the radio classes at this station, and was put into written form at the request of the men under instruction. Acknowledgment is gratefully made to the authors of the publications noted in the bibliography, to Chief Electrician (RO) R. B. Black, U.S.N.R.F., for the diagrams appearing in the text, to Ensign Rudolph Oeser, U.S.N., for assistance in its preparation, to Dr. Erich Hausmann of the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn for many valuable suggestions, and to the following for their courtesy in supplying photographs: Dr. F. A. Kolster of the Bureau of Standards; Federal Telegraph Co., Haller-Cunningham Electric Co., and the Moorhead Laboratories, of San Francisco; Kilboume & Clark Manufacturing Co. of Seattle; Weston Electrical Instrument Co. of Newark, and General Radio Co. of Cambridge. Excerpt from Radiotelegraphy IT is hoped that this book may serve a useful purpose in enabling readers to' become acquainted with the principles and practice of radio-telegraphy. Some knowledge of electricity is essential, and, though it is impossible to thoroughly understand the phenomena without much handling of electric apparatus, an attempt is made in the first chapter to state as simply as possible the fundamental facts relating to electricity and magnetism; for until these are grasped it is hopeless to try to appreciate the mechanism of radiant waves. In the next two chapters electric vibra tions are first explained, and then the fundamental pheno menon of radio-telegraphy, the radiation of energy from a vibrating electric circuit. Excerpt from Elements of Radio Telephony The phenomenal popularity into which radio telephonic broadcasting has sprung has been the means of interesting thousands in radio transmission. To the non-technical reader the transmission of speech and music with no visible means of intercommunication is somewhat of a mystery. While it is mysterious it is no more mysterious than the production and recognition of light, for radio and light waves are of exactly the same nature. The relation of radio and light waves is the same as that existing between red and blue light, it is merely a matter of frequency. Of course the "colors" of the radio spectrum are invisible as far as the human eye is concerned and the radio receiver is nothing more than an artificial eye sensitive to these extremely low-frequency "colors." This little volume has a three-fold purpose: first, to present in simplified form a brief discussion of what happens when messages are sent and received by radio; secondly a brief, simplified description of the apparatus required to produce these effects and how it operates; and lastly, practical unbiased information for the experimenter who desires certain results but who does not know what apparatus is necessary. The use of mathematics has been almost entirely avoided and the treatment in most cases is qualitative rather than quantitative.
