Hablar del dinero en la pareja es hablar de algo más que de una gestión administrativa. Es colocarnos como observadores justo en el punto de intersección donde se cruzan las pasiones individuales, los mandatos sociales y las elecciones ético-políticas que cada uno adopta en sus comportamientos. Es explicitar el poder, desmitificar el amor, desnudar ideologías, despertar fantasmas y destapar resentimientos. Pero es también y fundamentalmente una de las maneras privilegiadas para desenmascarar las múltiples hipocresías en las que están enredados los hombres y las mujeres, privándose de disfrutar con plenitud de un intercambio más libre, más creativo, más enriquecedor y sobre todo más solidario. Han pasado 26 años de la primera edición de "El dinero en la pareja" y son muchos los cambios políticos, sociales y culturales que se sucedieron en las últimas décadas. Entre ellos, es innegable que se incrementó el número de mujeres que accedieron al dinero y también al poder. Sin embargo, la independencia económica que muchas de ellas lograron no siempre significó una real autonomía; tampoco, por desgracia, el acceso al poder por parte de algunas se tradujo en una modificación del modelo patriarcal imperante. Cuando miramos el fondo de la cuestión es posible comprender que, a pesar de los esfuerzos de aquellos grupos que luchan por una sociedad más solidaria, el modelo patriarcal sigue imponiendo su impronta en el proceso de socialización tanto de los hombres como de las mujeres. Este es uno de los motivos profundos por el cual dicho modelo --que se caracteriza por ser jerárquico, autoritario y discriminatorio-- es repetido por algunas mujeres cuando acceden al dinero y al poder. I was interested in money since childhood. I remember we often spoke of it at home. My parents had enjoyed a comfortable position in Europe, but due to the vicissitudes of war, they were forced to seek new life courses. They landed in Argentina, where they started from scratch. My grandfather was a wealthy banker in Vienna and my grandmother, Carolina Goldschmidt (German for gold forging), came from one of the most renowned local families. Her mother had been one of the first patients of the then young and unknown Sigmund Freud. My father, an engineer, met my mother in Prague. During World War II, women held minor roles. My mother used to say, "Men do not like women who are too smart". That sentence, her tenacity and her fighting spirit were essential life lessons for me. The most frequent statement my father used to make was that young people should travel and study. I felt most identified with this recommendation and, at the age of 14, I began to earn my own money teaching English. Handling my economy was synonymous with independence and freedom. Therefore, I practised and passed it on to my children, supporting another parental slogan that read: "If you earn ten, save three". I began my research on the career development of women and men almost three decades ago. In those early studies, my topics of interest were financial intelligence and socialisation in families.

At a time of global and domestic economic crisis, the financial aspects of domestic and familial relationships are more important and more strained than ever before. The focus of this book is on the distribution of wealth and poverty in traditional and non-traditional familial relationships. The volume takes an interdisciplinary approach to explore the way in which money matters are structured and governed within close personal relationships and the extent to which they have an impact on the nature and economic dynamics of relationships. As such, the key areas of investigation are the extent to which participation in the labour market, unpaid caregiving, inheritance, pensions and welfare reform have an impact on familial relationships. The authors also explore governmental and legal responses by investigating the privileging of certain types of domestic relationships, through fiscal and non-fiscal measures, and the differential provision on relationship breakdown. The impact of budget and welfare cuts is also examined for their effect on equality in domestic relationships.
